Las extracciones en los primeros seis meses del año elevaron las reservas totales a 83 toneladas. La economía de la otrora próspera nación de la OPEP está sumida en un colapso de años, privando al gobierno de fondos. Más recientemente, las sanciones estadounidenses se han dirigido a las exportaciones de petróleo, erosionando aún más los recursos estatales.
Esas reservas estaban valoradas en cuatro mil 900 millones de dólares a fines de junio, una caída de 187 millones de dólares desde fines de 2020. El año pasado, las reservas de oro del país sudamericano cayeron 19 toneladas. El banco central no ha revelado a los compradores de su oro. Tanto él como la empresa estatal de extracción de oro también están bajo sanciones estadounidenses.
La oposición de Venezuela ha alegado que algunas de las barras de oro se enviaron a Malí y los Emiratos Árabes Unidos a cambio de divisas.
Las reservas de oro del banco central durante décadas superaron las 300 toneladas. Cuando la crisis económica de Venezuela comenzó a empeorar en 2015, el gobierno comenzó a usar oro como respaldo para préstamos de bancos internacionales y ha perdido algunas barras como resultado de esos canjes.
