Los tres hijos de Lucy Akinyi se infectaban tan seguido de malaria que tenían que ir al hospital varias veces al mes, por lo cual cuando le ofrecieron participar en un programa piloto para la vacuna de la malaria no lo dudó.
En el oeste de Kenia, donde el paludismo es endémico, más de 100.000 niños fueron inoculados con esta nueva vacuna. En África Subsahariana la malaria mata cada año a 260.000 menores de cinco años, reseñó AFP.
Este innovador plan de vacunación comenzó en 2019 en Kenia, Ghana y Malaui para probar un compuesto que tardó 30 años en ser elaborado.
En octubre de 2021, la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) aprobó el uso generalizado de esta vacuna para niños en otras zonas de riesgo.
Para Akinyi y su familia, que viven en la comuna rural de Siaya, cerca del lago Victoria, la vacuna ha hecho maravillas.
La mujer debía asegurarse de que sus hijos durmieran bajo los mosquiteros y pese a sus esfuerzos, los niños seguían siendo víctimas de las picadas cuando jugaban fuera de su casa.
“Tuvimos mucha malaria. A veces nos ocurría que teníamos que ir tres veces al mes a un hospital”, explicó.
Desde que fueron vacunados, ninguno de sus hijos ha caído enfermo, lo que les cambió la vida.
Su cuñada, Millicent Akoth Oyoya, también vacunó a sus hijos tras ver los resultados en sus sobrinos.
Un “cambio de juego”
Los centros de salud del oeste de Kenia, donde los servicios pediátricos suelen estar saturados por los casos de malaria, ya comienzan a ver los resultados.
La llegada de pacientes con Malaria disminuyó y también la gravedad de los síntomas de los enfermos.
“Desde que comenzamos a administrar la vacuna en septiembre de 2019, hemos observado una reducción de los casos de paludismo”, indicó Elsa Swerua, enfermera jefe de un centro de salud en Akala, en Siaya.
Esta enfermedad puede afectar a una persona varias veces en un año y con esta vacuna, las familias reducen sus desplazamientos a los centros de salud, lo que representa un ahorro importante para los hogares.
“Antes de las vacunas (…) gastábamos mucho dinero en medicamentos, en ir al hospital”, contó Akinyi.
El doctor Simon Kariuki, investigador del Instituto Keniano de Investigación Médica, que es un importante experto en paludismo, afirmó que la vacuna fue un “cambio de juego”.
“Mostramos que esta vacuna es segura y que puede ser administrada a niños pequeños africanos que son quienes más sufren el paludismo”, agregó.
