La necesidad empujó a Henry Alviárez a «echar pico» en las minas artesanales de carbón de Lobatera, un pueblo de los Andes venezolanos golpeado por la crisis donde este oficio representa para muchos la única opción.
Lobatera, en el estado Táchira, fronterizo con Colombia, cuenta con unos 50 yacimientos explotados por 22 cooperativas de entre ocho y 10 trabajadores, refleja el trabajo especial de AFP.
No ganan más de 120 dólares mensuales.
El carbón, usado principalmente para la generación de energía, se mueve al vecino estado Mérida o a Colombia a través de caminos irregulares.
«Estoy aquí por necesidad«, dice Henry, de 51 años, a la AFP. «Aquí hay muchos herreros, mecánicos, pero no podemos trabajar en eso» por una crisis económica sin precedentes que hundió a Venezuela en ocho años de recesión y cuatro de hiperinflación.
Henry sale todos los días muy temprano a la mina Los Parra, a unos 45 minutos en moto de su casa. Dice que el trabajo es «desgastante» entre la falta de oxígeno en lo más profundo del túnel y las precarias condiciones, sin equipos de seguridad para una emergencia.
Sus tres hijos emigraron. Uno está en Chile, otro en Colombia y el tercero en Ecuador. «Y menos mal que se fueron«, asegura convencido que de quedarse, su futuro sería muy probablemente con él en la mina. «¿Quien va querer trabajar ahí? ¡Nadie!«.
Las minas de Lobatera, de las que dependen unas 500 familias, están enclavadas en una zona montañosa, con caminos de tierra por donde solo pueden circular camiones o motocicletas.
Hace mucho calor y las minas no cuentan con baños o un área para comer o descansar con algún toldo. El túnel muchas veces representa el único refugio para protegerse del inclemente sol.
«Es un trabajo bastante arriesgado, porque nos toca meter bastante madera en las minas para protegernos y encomendarnos mucho a Dios«, sostiene José Alberto Trejo, 38, que ya trabajó en minas en Colombia, ante la falta de oportunidades de empleo en construcción, donde antes se desempeñaba.
En promedio, cada minero en Los Parra puede llegar a extraer una tonelada diaria, pero no hay cifras confiables sobre la producción total en los 50 yacimientos.
«Trabajar muy duro»
Henry trabaja sin camisa, pico en mano y un casco con una linterna. Tiene todo el cuerpo manchado de negro por el carbón, que se mezcla con el sudor. Lo trata de limpiar, sin éxito, con un trapo verde.
«El precio del carbón es bajo y con los años ha caído más, por lo que ahora toca trabajar más duro«, explica por su parte Pablo José Vivas, 61, compañero de Henry en Los Parra.
Los mineros entregan su producción al director de la mina, que la vende a 50 dólares la tonelada a camiones que la transporta. Las ganancias se distribuyen entre los miembros de la cooperativa.
Pablo, que tiene más de 20 años trabajando en estas minas, toma un pedazo del mineral recién extraído y lo sostiene con sus manos, manchadas de negro. La piedra brilla, la luz del casco le da una tonalidad violeta, como si se tratara de una joya.
El trabajo se distribuye en tres etapas: está quien perfora con el pico el material granular, otro que hala la carretilla y quien luego vacía el carbón en la carreta para sacarlo al exterior.
Un hombre tiene carbón hasta las rodillas dentro de una de las muchas pilas que descansan fuera del túnel esperando que llegue el camión para transportarlas.
El gobernador de Táchira, Freddy Bernal, chavista, impulsa inversiones extranjeras -rusas, chinas, indias, entre otros países- para Lobatera.
«Generaría una cantidad de empleos, además de un impacto económico«, dijo, garantizando que las familias que allí trabajan por más de 40 años no serán perjudicadas.
Pero el anuncio, que aún no se ha concretado, lejos de alivio, causa temor entre los mineros.
«Lo rudimentario se va a acabar, porque ellos van a trabajar con nueva tecnología y aquí nosotros no sabemos«, acota Pablo. «Muchos nos vamos a quedar por fuera«.
