Organizaciones no gubernamentales de Estados Unidos enviaron a Cuba una donación de miles de kilos de alimentos para apoyar a la población y demostrar su desacuerdo con las sanciones impuestas por su país a la nación caribeña.
El flete fue realizado por las organizaciones Puentes de Amor, Código Rosa -CODEPINK en inglés- y Foro del Pueblo -The People’s Forum– con unas 10 toneladas de latas de atún y pasta llegó a la isla el viernes.
“Estamos realmente muy decepcionados y, más que eso, diría que nos disgustan las políticas estadounidenses en tiempos de una pandemia cuando todo el mundo necesita cooperar y mostrar amor y comprensión mutua”, dijo a periodistas en el aeropuerto capitalino la activista Medea Benjamin, de CODEPINK.
Junto con la carga llegaron varios activistas -entre ellos Benjamin- que desplegaron una bandera cubana y otra estadounidense al tiempo que cajas de cartón bajaban de las bodegas de la nave, constató The Associated Press.
Estados Unidos inició una política de sanciones tras el triunfo de la revolución cubana a fin de presionar por un cambio de modelo político en la isla. En 2014, bajo la presidencia de Barack Obama, se produjo un acercamiento y se reabrieron embajadas, pero el mandatario no logró que el Congreso levantara las leyes de bloqueo que son la base de las sanciones.
La ayuda fue recibida por el Centro Martin Luther King de La Habana, una institución religiosa evangélica, y será entregada en las provincias orientales a donde la actual crisis económica que atraviesa la isla golpeó fuerte.
Los coordinadores indicaron que posteriormente se complementará con el envío de leche en polvo y aceite de cocina, productos que suelen escasear en la isla, que actualmente atraviesa dificultades de abastecimiento agudizadas por las sanciones estadounidenses y la pandemia del nuevo coronavirus.
“Lo principal que tenemos que hacer en casa es cambiar las políticas de nuestro gobierno. Y quiero que sepa que es una política que podría ser apoyada por un pequeño grupo, en el sur de Florida, pero no es una política que represente a la gente de los Estados Unidos”, agregó Benjamin.
Las tres organizaciones con sede en Estados Unidos suelen expresar su oposición a las sanciones estadounidenses, que fueron incrementadas radicalmente durante la administración del expresidente Donald Trump y no han sido modificadas por su sucesor Joe Biden, pese a sus promesas de campaña.
Poco antes, en un comunicado de prensa, los organizadores dijeron que entre las donaciones -cuyo monto no se especificó- había muchas de cubanoamericanos.
En la pista del aeropuerto estaba también el reverendo Raúl Suárez, quien dirige el Centro Martin Luther King.
“Significa mucho (la donación) cuando el actual presidente de Estados Unidos no ha cambiado ni un ápice su política agresiva, falta de amor, con una ausencia cristiana de todo, sigue tratando de combatir a nuestra revolución y a nuestro pueblo”, señaló Suárez.
En julio organizaciones no gubernamentales de Estados Unidos enviaron millones de jeringas -las donaciones de aquella campaña llegaron a los 500.000 dólares- para apoyar la vacunación contra el COVID-19 que en la isla se realizó con antígenos de producción nacional.
