Las autoridades farmacológicas de Chile, uno de los países con el proceso de inoculación más rápido del mundo, aprobaron este lunes el uso de emergencia de la vacuna elaborada por el laboratorio chino Sinovac (Coronavac) en niños mayores de 6 años.
«Protegiendo a nuestros niños, protegemos también a nuestros adultos. Los datos ya demuestran que están aumentando los contagios en niños. Es muy necesario ampliar a este grupo etario», anunció el director del Instituto de Salud Pública (IPS), Heriberto García.
Por cinco votos a favor y tres en contra, los expertos dieron luz verde a la inoculación infantil con Coronavac, convirtiéndose así en la segunda vacuna en aplicarse a menores tras la de Pfizer, que se inyecta en niños de entre 12 y 17 años desde junio.
«Los niños sí son transmisores del virus. Al principio de la pandemia se pensaba que no, pero hoy en día ya ha suficientes datos que lo confirman», agregó García.
Según los últimos datos del Gobierno chileno, la vacuna de Sinovac tiene 58,49 por ciento de efectividad para prevenir infecciones sintomáticas, 86 por ciento para prevenir hospitalización, 89,6 por ciento para evitar ingresar en la UCI y 86,3 por ciento para prevenir la muerte por COVID-19 al día 14 después de recibir la segunda dosis.
