Monseñor Gustavo Ocando Yarmarte es un legado para el estado Zulia y muy especialmente para su natal Maracaibo.
El «Padre Ocando», como se le conocía cariñosamente, fue el creador de la Corporación Niños Cantores del Zulia, integrada por el Instituto Niños Cantores del Zulia, la Universidad Cecilio Acosta, el Teatro Escuela Niños Cantores, el Complejo Deportivo Niños Cantores, la granja Ciudad Cantores, el estudio de grabación NC-Studio, red de medios de comunicación integrada por tres televisoras y una emisora de radio; así como fundador de la Iglesia de San Tarcisio, varios museos y bibliotecas, siendo presidente del Sistema de Salud administrado por la Asociación Civil Madre Rafols, sin fines de lucro.
Además de su vocación como pastor de la iglesia católica, Ocando Yamarte estudió teología a profundidad, historia universal e historia de Venezuela. Era un excelente comunicador que escribió unas 20 obras literarias, algunas ya publicadas y otras por publicar, entre las cuales destacan la «Historia del Zulia».
Este año monseñor Ocando Yamarte cumpliría 59 años de ordenación sacerdotal. Se convirtió en hombre de la Iglesia cuando tenía 24 años.
Ocando Yamarte falleció este jueves 10 febrero dejando un luto inmenso en el pueblo maracaibero. Palabras de agradecimientos por el trabajo y la labor desempeñada por monseñor destacan en las redes sociales.
