Fue impetuoso y despiadado, derrotó a rival tras rival en un periodo de ocho años que dio inicio con un controvertido empate contra Vito Antuofermo en 1979 del que después se cobraría venganza.
Salía a pelear con el convencimiento que los aficionados del boxeo y promotores no le daban el reconocimiento que se merecía. Se enojó tanto por no ser presentado previo a una pelea en 1982 con su apodo de Maravilla que se apersonó a un tribunal para cambiar legalmente su nombre.
“Fue sin duda uno de los grandes medianos de todos los tiempos, pero también una de las mejores personas que he conocido y me tocó ser promotor”, dijo Bob Arum. “Fue un hombre auténtico, leal y una persona fantástica”.
Toda duda que Haglar realmente no era una Maravilla se despejó en una noches de primavera en 1985. Se midió contra Hearns en una de las más esperadas peleas de peso mediano de la era, al aire libre en el Caesars Palace en Las Vegas. Desde que sonó el campanazo inicial, se pusieron a intercambiar golpes durante tres minutos del que es considerado el mejor asalto en la historia del boxeo.
Hagler acabaría noqueando a Hearns en el tercer asalto, enviándolo a la lona con un bombardeo de golpes pese a que sangraba profusamente desde la frente, al punto que el árbitro había estado a punto de parar la pelea al comienzo del round.
“Cuando detuvieron la pelea para que me revisaran el corte, entendí que estaban haciendo triquiñuelas y no iba a permitir que me quitaran el título”, comentó Hagler después. “Fue una sensación de pavor. ¿Por qué van a parar esta pelea?′ No me había fijado que estaba sangrando. No caía en mis ojos. Sabía que tenía que destruirlo (a Hearns)”.
Arum señaló que Hagler simplemente arriesgó todo para vencer a Hearns, cuya derecha era temida en la división pero no mantener a raya a Hagler.
“Esa fue un pelea increíble”, dijo Arum. “Quizás la mejor pelea de todos los tiempos”.
