Grupos de activistas exigieron a la Administración del presidente Joe Biden que investigue el posible uso indebido de sustancias químicas tóxicas en un centro de detención de inmigrantes en Moore Haven, en el condado de Glades (Florida), informó este martes la organización Earthjustice.
Este grupo ecologista y otros 13 grupos que forman parte de la Coalición Shut Down Glades (Cierren Glades) solicitaron por carta a la Agencia de Protección Ambiental (EPA) que compruebe si son ciertas las denuncias sobre el “uso indebido de desinfectantes químicos de grado industrial altamente concentrados” en el recinto.
Según la denuncia, supuestamente se utiliza “hasta 50 veces la concentración permitida” de estas sustancias y en espacios “pobremente ventilados” en los que los detenidos almuerzan y pasan su tiempo.
La exposición a estos productos químicos habría provocado, denuncian, que los detenidos presenten dificultades para respirar, sangrado de la nariz, dolores de cabeza y náuseas intensas.
De acuerdo con los firmantes de la carta, los problemas pueden ir más allá, pues los compuestos que se encuentran en estos desinfectantes pertenecen a un tipo de sustancias químicas vinculadas a efectos adversos para la salud como asma, infertilidad, defectos congénitos y daños en el ADN.
En la misiva enviada a la agencia federal, los grupos piden que el Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE) libere de forma inmediata a los inmigrantes detenidos en este centro.
“La única solución es el cierre total, con los detenidos liberados con sus seres queridos en lugar de ser transferidos o deportados donde puedan sufrir más daños”, dijo Angeliki Bouliakis Andronis, abogada de Americans for Immigrant Justice, una de las organizaciones firmantes.
Los signatarios instaron además a la EPA que investigue el supuesto “uso ilegal de productos químicos” en los centros de detención de ICE en todo el país y no solo en el de Glades.
Según datos oficiales, actualmente hay más de 18,000 inmigrantes detenidos por ICE en este tipo de centros.
“La EPA es responsable de hacer cumplir las leyes federales que protegen a las personas de la exposición peligrosa a estos desinfectantes clasificados como pesticidas. Es obligación de la EPA iniciar una investigación completa sobre esta instalación y otros centros de detención de inmigrantes alrededor del país”, dijo la abogada de Earthjustice, Dominique Burkhardt.
Rollin Manning, ahora detenido en el Centro de Procesamiento de ICE de Krome, en Florida, asegura que sufrió intoxicación por monóxido de carbono mientras estaba detenido en Glades, centro donde, aseguró, tratan a los inmigrantes como si no fueran “seres humanos”.
Según los grupos firmantes, la EPA debería tomar medidas para que se ponga “fin al abuso” que sufren estos inmigrantes que están bajo custodia de ICE y de los operadores de estos centros de detención.
