Encuentran raras monedas de oro de la época de la peste negra en el Reino Unido

Un buscador de metales ha encontrado dos monedas de oro muy raras en Inglaterra que datan de mediados del siglo XIV, una época en que la peste negra asolaba a Europa, anunció el programa Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS), a cargo del Museo Británico.

Ambas monedas fueron descubiertas en octubre de 2019 cerca de la localidad de Reepham, en el condado de Norfolk, pero solo recientemente los investigadores completaron las evaluaciones. La primera moneda de 23 quilates, llamada leopardo, había sido retirada pocos meses después de su acuñación en 1344 y, casi ninguna ha subsistido, lo que la hace especial.

Debido a que en aquella época el valor asignado a las monedas de leopardo sobrevaloraba el oro frente a la plata, el rey Eduardo III trató de rectificar estos problemas introduciendo nuevas monedas entre 1344 y 1351. Fue entonces cuando se acuñó la otra moneda recién descubierta, llamada noble de oro. Esta tiene un peso de unos 7,7 gramos, más del doble que el leopardo de 3,5 gramos.

«Es probable que ambas monedas hayan caído al suelo al mismo tiempo, ya sea como parte de una pérdida de la cartera de alguien o como parte de un tesoro oculto«, señalaron los investigadores.

Las dos piezas se encontraban dobladas por la mitad y con algunos leves rasguños, pero en buen estado de conservación. Se estima que su valor en el siglo XIV sería de unos 16.700 dólares actuales.

Los expertos creen que su hallazgo apunta a que el leopardo puede haber estado en circulación durante mucho más tiempo de lo que se sospechaba anteriormente. Su uso coincidió con la peste negra que llegó a Inglaterra en 1348, un evento «cataclísmico» en el que murió casi un tercio de la población y los problemas de acuñación perdieron prioridad.
