Los desaparecidos tras el desplome parcial de un edificio residencial en Miami-Dade pueden ser al menos unos 99, según dijo este jueves el director de la Policía de ese condado del sur de Florida, Freddy Ramírez, citado por medios locales.
Ramírez dijo que se sabe del paradero de 53 residentes del edificio Champlain Towers, pero hay otros 99 de los que no se tienen noticias después del desastre ocurrido a primeras horas del jueves, informó el diario Miami Herald.
Hasta ahora se barajaba extraoficialmente la cifra de 51 desaparecidos, pero sigue sin haber una «cuenta oficial», de acuerdo con Rachel Johnson, directora de comunicaciones de la alcaldesa de Miami-Dade, Daniella Levine Cava.
Por ahora, solo se ha confirmado oficialmente la muerte de una persona en el colapso parcial del edificio, de 12 plantas, 40 años de antigüedad y situado en primera linea de playa en Surfside, al norte de Miami Beach.

Los equipos de rescate trabajan bajo la lluvia en busca de personas atrapadas entre los escombros del edificio, que se desplomó parcialmente en medio de la noche mientras sus ocupantes dormían, por causas aún no determinadas.
En solo segundos 55 unidades del edificio Champlain Towers, situado en la ciudad de Surfside, con una población mayoritariamente judía, se vinieron abajo como «panqueques», en palabras del alcalde de Surfside, Charles Burckett.
