Pelé estuvo hospitalizado durante todo el mes de septiembre tras detectarle en unos exámenes rutinarios un tumor «sospechoso» en el colon del que fue operado pocos días después de su ingreso. El Hospital Albert Einstein de Sao Paulo, donde permaneció internado todo ese tiempo, informó entonces que el ídolo brasileño seguiría un tratamiento de quimioterapia.
