El Gobierno colombiano respondió al de Nicaragua que la democracia de ese país «tiene el tamaño de su dictador», al tiempo que pidió que la comunidad internacional aplique sanciones al presidente Daniel Ortega.
«Hoy la calidad democrática de Nicaragua tiene el tamaño de su dictador», dijo la Cancillería colombiana en un comunicado en respuesta a Ortega, quien acusó a Colombia de ser un «narcoestado». La Cancillería colombiana agrega que las democracias del mundo «seguiremos instando a la comunidad internacional para que aplique a todos los miembros del régimen de Nicaragua las sanciones económicas y personales que eviten que gane tiempo para seguirse lucrando, destruyendo la riqueza nacional y pisoteando la dignidad humana, como le sucedió a Venezuela».
Nicaragua vive una crisis política y social desde abril de 2018, acentuada tras las controvertidas elecciones del pasado 7 de noviembre, en las que Ortega fue reelegido para un quinto mandato y cuarto consecutivo, con sus principales contendientes en prisión. Anteriormente, Ortega dijo que Colombia «es un narcoestado » y criticó a su homólogo colombiano, Iván Duque, por cuestionar a su Gobierno en los foros internacionales en asuntos como los derechos humanos.
Ante esto, Colombia expresó también su «profunda preocupación» por las acciones de Ortega para «distraer la atención de una comunidad internacional que rechaza con vehemencia la nueva dictadura que se instala en el país centroamericano». Esas situaciones, dice el Gobierno colombiano, generan el «repudio de los países vecinos y la preocupación regional por el riesgo de que el pueblo nicaragüense viva el horror del éxodo, el desarraigo, la pérdida de libertades y el brutal empobrecimiento que viven hoy el pueblo venezolano y el pueblo cubano».
El pronunciamiento colombiano añade que frente a los múltiples reclamos internacionales para que se celebren elecciones transparentes, se restauren los partidos políticos opositores y se libere a los opositores encarcelados, la «respuesta de Ortega consiste en atacar a Colombia para distraer la atención y la censura internacional sobre su total ilegitimidad».
Según la Cancillería, Colombia reconoce los sufrimientos padecidos a causa del narcotráfico y las guerrillas y por eso «nuestro Gobierno y los anteriores se han concentrado en fortalecer el marco jurídico y las instituciones que salvaguardan los principios democráticos, garantizan los derechos de todos nuestros ciudadanos y, en particular, protegen y promueven los derechos humanos».
Finalmente, Colombia hizo un llamado a la comunidad internacional para que «no se permita que las argucias de un régimen que se ve amenazado invisibilicen el sufrimiento de sus víctimas y se abandonen las esperanzas de un pueblo que clama libertad».
