Caraqueña, pero cridada en Pozuelos, a las afueras de la ciudad costera de Puerto La Cruz (estado Anzoátegui, este), esta extrovertida atleta está segura de tener condiciones para convertirse en la primera triplista que alcanza los 16 metros, lo que destrozaría la plusmarca mundial de 15,50 de la ucraniana Inessa Kravets, establecida en 1995, el mismo año en que ella nació, reseñó AFP.
“El límite es el cielo”, advirtió Rojas a la AFP en la vía a los Juegos Olímpicos.
Convierte las pistas de atletismo en una fiesta: pide aplausos al público para encender las competencias y hace breves bailecitos que a una de sus hermanas, Yerilda Zapata, le recuerdan “el tumbao” (“swing”) que siempre ha tenido. “Ella es la más rumbera”, rememora Yerilda mientras ríe con picardía.
Con una permanente sonrisa, aunque sin piedad, Rojas derrumba barreras.
Solo siete centímetros separan a esta morena de 1,92 metros de estatura del récord mundial de Kravets. Ya tiene en sus manos desde el 21 de febrero de 2020 la plusmarca bajo techo, con un salto de 15,43 que dejó en el pasado el registro de 15,36 que la rusa Tatyana Lebedeva había fijado en 2004.
Espera convertirse, además, en la primera mujer de Venezuela con una medalla de oro olímpica.
“Decían que estábamos locos”
Atleta del Año 2020 junto al garrochista sueco-estadounidense Armand ‘Mondo’ Duplantis por World Athletics, Yulimar Rojas era una “niña hiperactiva” que siempre quiso ser deportista, recuerda su madre, Yuleisi.
Cuando siendo adolescente vio por televisión a su compatriota Rubén Limardo colgarse el oro en la espada individual de Londres-2012, Rojas se metió entre ceja y ceja que ella podía hacerlo un día: “Me metí en la cabeza que quería eso”.
Soñaba con el voleibol y acabó en atletismo. Aunque prometía muchísimo en salto alto, ganando oro en los Juegos Sudamericanos de 2014, ese mismo año decidió junto a su primer entrenador, Jesús Velásquez, cambiar al salto triple.
“Decían que estábamos locos”, recuerda Velásquez. “La locura fue buena. (Hicimos) salto alto, 100 metros, salto largo, salto triple y nos quedamos con el salto triple. Me enamoré perdidamente del triple. Ha sido la mejor decisión de mi vida”, cuenta a su vez Rojas, la Messi de la sección de atletismo del FC Barcelona y actual discípula del mito cubano Iván Pedroso.
Si bien es muy cuidadosa con su vida personal, la deportista declara con orgullo ser parte de la comunidad LGBTI.
“Vive y deja vivir (…). El amor no se debería explicar. Ojalá llegue el momento en el que todos seamos libres, sin miedos de mostrar nuestro verdadero ser”, publicó recientemente en Twitter.
“El oro me espera”
En los Juegos Olímpicos de Rio de Janeiro-2016, la colombiana Caterine Ibargüen ganó el oro del salto triple femenino (15,17), mientras Rojas se quedó con la plata (14,98) y la kazaja Olga Rypakova con el bronce (14,74).
La venezolana, campeona mundial en 2017 y 2019 y campeona mundial en pista cubierta en 2016 y 2018, es ahora indiscutible favorita en Tokio-2020.
Ella lo sabe y prepara la próxima fiesta.
“Ayúdenme a elegir… ¿De qué color quieren que me pinte el cabello para Tokio-2020? Estoy emocionada”, publicó Rojas en redes sociales, acompañando un selfie. El cambiante look de Rojas, con cortes de cabello distintos y multiplicidad de colores en cada competencia, también es parte del espectáculo.
“Sé que esta vez el oro olímpico me está esperando”, dice con férrea confianza.
