El Instituto Volcanológico de Canarias (Involcan) estima que la cantidad de dióxido de azufre (SO2) que ha emitido el volcán de la isla española de La Palma desde que entró en erupción el 19 de septiembre asciende a unas 250 mil toneladas.
Este cálculo, señaló Involcan en las redes sociales, puede considerarse «un valor subestimado» dado que está basado en la realización de medidas de emisión de SO2 en posición móvil terrestre, que en la actualidad presentan «importantes limitaciones debido a varios factores».
A pesar de estas limitaciones, añadió Involcan, conocer estos niveles de emisión de SO2 permite también estimar el volumen de magma arrojado por esta erupción, aproximadamente unos 35 millones de metros cúbicos.
El comité científico que asesora al Plan de Emergencias Volcánicas de Canarias (Involcan) calculaba hace varios días en unos 80 millones de metros cúbicos la cantidad de material emitido por el volcán, incluyendo piroclastos.
