La Cancillería de Venezuela aseguró este sábado que la detención de estadounidenses en el país, presuntamente implicados en “delitos graves”, es “legítima”, luego de que el Departamento de Estado de EEUU calificara las aprehensiones de “ilegales”.
“El Gobierno de Venezuela rechaza el pronunciamiento del Departamento de Estado de los EEUU, en relación con ciudadanos estadounidenses legítimamente privados de libertad en el país, por su presunta responsabilidad en la comisión de delitos graves y que, en su mayoría, se encuentran convictos y confesos de los crímenes que se les imputan”, indicó en un comunicado.
El Departamento de Estado recordó el viernes que el ciudadano y veterano de la Marina Matthew Heath resultó detenido “arbitrariamente” en Venezuela, hace dos años.
“A Matthew le arrestaron en septiembre de 2020 sobre la base de cargos falsos y el proceso judicial en su contra sigue su curso”, añadió en un anuncio de prensa publicado en su página web.
Sostuvo que el secretario de Estado, Antony Blinken, está “abocado personalmente a traer de vuelta a nuestro país a los ciudadanos estadounidenses que sean rehenes o hayan sido detenidos ilegalmente”.
“Seguimos interpelando al régimen de (Nicolás) Maduro para que libere en forma inmediata e incondicional a Matthew y a todos los demás ciudadanos estadounidenses detenidos indebidamente en Venezuela”, ratificó el Departamento de Estado.
“Estado democrático, de derecho y justicia”
Sobre esto, la Cancillería venezolana afirmó que la nación es un “Estado democrático y social de derecho y justicia”, donde las instituciones ejercen sus competencias constitucionales y legales para investigar y sancionar, con “absolutas garantías del debido proceso, toda conducta que implique un delito” previsto en la legislación.
“Los ciudadanos de los Estados Unidos no son una excepción”, sostuvo el Ejecutivo venezolano.
Agregó que es “lamentable” que las autoridades estadounidenses insistan en “su pretensión de conferir una inaceptable inmunidad o patente de corso a sus nacionales, es un desprecio absoluto a la soberanía y autodeterminación de los pueblos”.
“Venezuela, en toda circunstancia, hará respetar las leyes de la nación y sus instituciones democráticas. En ese sentido, reivindica los espacios y canales abiertos con los Estados Unidos, en búsqueda del entendimiento en torno a temas de la relación bilateral”, apostilló.
En marzo pasado el Gobierno venezolano liberó a los estadounidenses Gustavo Adolfo Cárdenas y Jorge Fernández, después de que la Administración Biden, con ayuda de organizaciones humanitarias, entablara negociaciones con Caracas.
