Venezolano vende dibujos en Twitter para comprar comida

Samuel Andrés Mendoza elige cuidadosamente los colores de decenas de lápices esparcidos sobre la atestada mesa de la cocina de su humilde hogar en Venezuela mientras se sienta a dibujar. El adolescente realiza trazos largos y cortos para lograr diferentes efectos en su dibujo. Tararea reguetón mientras sostiene lápices de colores de diferentes longitudes y cambia la presión para agregar contrastes al personaje de anime que toma forma en su bloc de dibujo.

Samuel vendió el dibujo en línea por un dólar. Es un esfuerzo que comenzó en enero con un tuit —en una cuenta creada a espaldas de su madre— con la esperanza de ganar un poco de dinero y darle a su familia un respiro de los desafíos económicos que enfrentan como la mayoría de los residentes de este atribulado país sudamericano.

“Hola, soy Samuel. Vendo mis dibujos a un dólar para ayudar a mi mama con mi dieta, comprarle una casa y una bodega para que no trabaje en la calle y se enferme de COVID y comprarme una mantequilla de maní para mí, gracias señor y señora”, tuiteó junto con las fotos de cuatro dibujos. Su tuit se volvió viral, y desde esta mesa con un mantel tejido, colocada entre un sofá gastado y una nevera oxidada, ha dibujado y vendido decenas de ilustraciones.

“La verdad, yo no sabía que iba a dibujar así, pero ha pasado el tiempo y he logrado pintar de verdad”, dijo Samuel, de 14 años, a principios de marzo, mostrando con orgullo su dibujo terminado de Goku, un personaje de la serie animada japonesa Dragon Ball. “Y aquí está.”

Samuel, su madre y dos hermanos viven en Barquisimeto, una vez una próspera ciudad agroindustrial, localizada a unas cinco horas al oeste de la capital venezolana. En un país donde los trabajadores ganan un salario promedio de dos dólares al mes, sus dibujos pueden marcar una gran diferencia en el presupuesto familiar.

Venezuela está sumida en una profunda crisis política, social y económica, que muchos críticos atribuyen a dos décadas de gobiernos socialistas que han dejado en bancarrota al otrora rico país petrolero. El país también se encuentra en su sexto año en recesión y sus residentes están lidiando con los altos precios de los alimentos fijados en dólares, los bajos salarios y una inflación de cuatro dígitos, lo que condena a millones a vivir en la pobreza.

La crisis ha obligado a casi cinco millones de personas a abandonar Venezuela en los últimos años en busca de mejores condiciones de vida.

Samuel y su madre, Magdalena Rodríguez, emigraron a Colombia en 2019 cuando los apagones generalizados en Venezuela coincidieron con el diagnóstico de desnutrición del adolescente. Pero, dijo Rodríguez, el dúo regresó a su país de origen en diciembre después de que ella perdió su trabajo y los venezolanos en la comunidad colombiana en la que vivían fueron discriminados luego de que un grupo de inmigrantes robó una tienda de comestibles.

Desde que regresaron a Venezuela, ella ha luchado por ganar dinero y comprar comida, lo cual es particularmente crucial para el artista en ciernes. La desnutrición, que según Rodríguez le ha hecho perder masa muscular, requiere que siga una dieta estricta y rica en proteínas de seis comidas al día: desayuno, almuerzo y cena y un refrigerio entre cada una.

“Haciéndola bien, semanalmente serían como 100 dólares”, dijo Magdalena, refiriéndose a la dieta de Samuel. “No es fácil, no llegamos allí” debido al alto costo de los alimentos.

Rodríguez ocasionalmente puede permitirse comprar pescado, que es rico en proteínas, pero sólo lo suficiente para que Samuel lo coma, no para toda la familia. Samuel también tiene síndrome de Asperger, que según Rodríguez le causa ansiedad, que lo lleva a buscar refugio en la comida.

Samuel dijo que comenzó a dibujar a los cinco años. En estos días, el jovencito necesita escuchar música mientras dibuja. Quiere comprarle una casa a su mamá para poder tener una habitación más espaciosa.

Algunos que descubrieron la cuenta de Twitter de Samuel han pedido 10 dibujos a la vez. Tiene una inclinación por los personajes de anime, pero también ha dibujado a la superestrella del fútbol Cristiano Ronaldo y al personaje animado Bob Esponja.

El artista y muralista venezolano Oscar Olivares, que dirige una academia de arte, vio los tuits de Samuel y le otorgó una beca para estudiar dibujo. Sus seguidores en las redes sociales también le han regalado una computadora portátil, un costoso juego de lápices de colores y mantequilla de maní, una buena fuente de proteínas.

Samuel dijo que podría aumentar los precios de sus dibujos ahora que ha avanzado de nivel en sus clases de la academia. Le gustaría hacer vídeos al estilo de YouTube sobre videojuegos cuando sea mayor.

Antes de que el tuit de Samuel se hiciera viral, su madre usó su propia cuenta de Twitter para solicitar un empleo. Eso le dio un trabajo de limpieza y alguien abrió una cuenta en línea de recaudación de fondos para ella.

Rodríguez, de 38 años, descubrió el esfuerzo de Samuel cuando le pidió la información de su cuenta bancaria para que la gente pudiese pagar por sus obras de arte. El dinero también les ha permitido adquirir productos que ella puede vender en un pequeño puesto de bocadillos en el centro de Barquisimeto.

En una reciente ida a una cooperativa cercana de su casa, Rodríguez compró algunos alimentos para la familia, incluidos varios frascos de compota para bebés, una caja de cereal y frijoles.
