Hace casi dos meses que Gilberto Rodríguez dejó a su mujer y a sus dos hijos pequeños en Caracas e inició junto a su perro “Negro” una azarosa caminata hacia el norte por ocho países.
Ha dormido en la calle, ha evadido delincuentes y ha tenido que pagar sobornos a policías guatemaltecos corruptos, pero nada le ha robado la esperanza de llegar a Estados Unidos, reseñó AFP.
Antes de llegar al río Bravo, si consigue alcanzar la última frontera sin que la policía mexicana lo detenga y lo deporte, debe atravesar otro río en la frontera entre Guatemala y México, el Suchiate.
Con su perro mestizo en brazos, paga poco más de un dólar para subirse a una balsa hecha de cámaras de neumáticos y tablas.
Gilberto y su perro han atravesado a pie la peligrosa selva del Darién, entre Colombia y Panamá. Luego Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras y Guatemala hasta alcanzar México.
En 10 minutos, llegó a México.
“Tenemos una situación muy crítica con la economía allá [en Venezuela] y nos toca salir corriendo. No alcanza para nada el sueldo, todo tú lo compras en dólares y lo que te pagan en bolívares no te rinde nada”, explica este joven delgado de 27 años en Ciudad Tecún Umán, en el suroeste de Guatemala, antes de cruzar el río.
Estados Unidos, su destino final, está a punto de levantar el título 42, un decreto aprobado en 2020 durante el gobierno de Donald Trump que permite expulsar de inmediato por la pandemia a los migrantes detenidos al ingresar al país.
Se prevé que la decisión del gobierno de Joe Biden de levantar el Título 42 genere un gran flujo de migrantes que buscan empleo y huyen de la pobreza y la violencia.
Pero al igual que Gilberto, la gran mayoría de quienes cruzan el río Suchiate no saben lo que es el Título 42, ni que está a punto de rescindirse.
“Plan hormiga”
Contrariamente a meses anteriores, cuando se agolpaban multitudes de migrantes esta frontera, ahora el flujo es pequeño. En las carreteras la policía guatemalteca sube constantemente a los buses para verificar la identidad de los viajeros.
El flujo migratorio por Guatemala llega en “grupos pequeños” que no demoran en pasar a México, comenta Alejandra Godínez, de la Oficina de Atención al Migrante en Ciudad Tecún Umán.
“Se disipan en varios grupos y luego ya se agrupan del lado mexicano”, agrega Godínez.
“Lo están haciendo en plan hormiga”, explica Rubén Méndez, alcalde de Ayutla, municipio donde se encuentra Tecún Umán. Asegura que los operativos son un disuasivo para que los migrantes no intenten formar nuevas caravanas como las que solían salir de Honduras, principalmente desde 2018.
Entre enero y mayo, Guatemala expulsó a unas 303 personas de Honduras, El Salvador y Honduras que no cumplieron los requisitos migratorios y sanitarios requeridos por la pandemia.
También expulsó a 69 venezolanos y a 165 cubanos, además de a otras 86 personas de diferentes nacionalidades.
La última caravana de unos 500 migrantes fue disuelta en enero, apenas entró en suelo guatemalteco. Un año antes, un éxodo de unas 7.000 personas fue contenido a bastonazos y gases lacrimógenos.
Gilberto, con la mochila al hombro, cuenta que en algunos tramos de Guatemala los uniformados le exigieron dinero para permitirle continuar.
“La vaina [asunto] está con los policías que nos quitan la plata”, dice.
Peligros
Con su pequeño perro mestizo de dos años y pelaje oscuro, Gilberto sorteó varios peligros.
“En la selva del Darién veníamos con unas mujeres y las violaron, a nosotros nos robaron los teléfonos”, cuenta sobre este tramo del camino donde abundan las bandas criminales.
En el camino, mascota y amo sobrevivieron de la caridad y compartido el mismo plato. También han dormido en la calle, pues algunos refugios no permiten animales.
Un día antes de embarcarse en el río, Gilberto, “Negro” y otros nueve caminantes hacen escala en la Casa del Migrante, una organización humanitaria que tiene un local en esta frontera. Allí se alimentan.
“Hemos venido entre montañas, ríos, quebradas, (y) la policía robándonos”, relata Moisés Ayerdi, un nicaragüense de 25 años que dice huir de la pobreza y de la represión en su país, donde dejó a su esposa e hija de tres años.
Todos quieren conseguir trabajo en Estados Unidos para enviar dinero a sus familias, y luego financiarles el viaje para reunificarse.
La rústica embarcación sobre el Suchiate es empujada por un hombre con una larga vara. Ni bien tocan la ribera del lado mexicano, “Negro” salta de los brazos de su amo y se adelanta en el sendero.
