Numerosos países de América, Asia y Europa suspendieron este viernes (26.11.2021) los viajes con África austral, mientras sonaban las alarmas sanitarias por la peligrosa variante ómicron y se revivía el miedo por la pandemia de COVID-19.
Estados Unidos, Brasil y países de todas las regiones del mundo anunciaron el cierre de sus fronteras a viajeros provenientes del sur de África, luego que la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) declaró que la cepa B.1.1.529 del coronavirus, que denominó ómicron, es una variante «preocupante» al igual que la actualmente dominante delta y las detectadas anteriormente alfa, beta y gama.
La nueva mutación, notificada por primera vez por Sudáfrica el 24 de noviembre, ya se identificó en Europa, con un caso confirmado el viernes en Bélgica, tras ser reportada en Sudáfrica, Botsuana, Hong Kong e Israel.
La OMS dijo que podría llevar varias semanas determinar si la nueva variante supone cambios en la transmisibilidad o gravedad del covid-19, así como en la eficacia de las vacunas, las pruebas y los tratamientos del covid-19, y advirtió contra la imposición de restricciones de viajes mientras la evidencia científica sea escasa.
Fronteras cerradas y vuelos suspendidos
Pero muchos países ya anunciaron el cierre de fronteras, en general para viajeros que lleguen de Sudáfrica, Botsuana, Zimbabue, Namibia, Lesoto, Esuatini (o Suazilandia), Mozambique y Malaui.
En las Américas, Estados Unidos, Canadá, Brasil, Argentina, República Dominicana y Guatemala fueron los últimos en restringir viajes desde allí.
La Unión Europea (UE) también recomendó a las 27 naciones del bloque impedir los ingresos de personas del sur de África, más allá de que muchos miembros, como Austria, República Checa, Alemania, Italia y Holanda, ya habían anunciado suspensiones de vuelos.
El primer país en blindarse fue Reino Unido, y otros le siguieron los pasos, incluyendo Rusia, Suiza, Arabia Saudita y Chipre. Además, Filipinas, Emiratos Árabes Unidos, Jordania y Marruecos anunciaron prohibiciones.
Sudáfrica: prohibiciones son «draconianas»
Japón dijo que requerirá un período de cuarentena de 10 días para los viajeros del sur de África. Y Australia señaló el sábado la prohibición de vuelos desde nueve países africanos y el veto de pasajeros no australianos que hayan estado recientemente en esa zona.
Sudáfrica calificó de «draconianas» las prohibiciones. «Ese tipo de reacción es instintiva y de pánico», declaró el ministro de Salud, Joe Phaahla.
Es un duro golpe para el país dado que las medidas restrictivas llegan justo antes del verano austral, cuando los safaris y las playas suelen atraer a un buen número de visitantes.
