La Unesco anunció este lunes el lanzamiento de un estudio de dos años para hacer un seguimiento de las especies marinas en los sitios del Patrimonio Mundial y ayudar a medir la vulnerabilidad de la biodiversidad ante el calentamiento global.
El proyecto, que utilizará ADN ambiental, quiere comprender las repercusiones del cambio climático en los patrones de distribución y migración de la vida marina para adaptar los esfuerzos de conservación a la evolución de las condiciones.
“Los sitios marinos del Patrimonio Mundial desempeñan un papel fundamental en la protección de los ecosistemas marinos de valor universal excepcional y ofrecen al público la oportunidad de apreciar y preservar los entornos marinos”, declaró en el comunicado Ernesto Ottone, subdirector general de Cultura de la Unesco.
Los científicos y residentes en estos enclaves recogerán material genético de los desechos, mucosas y células de los peces, incluidas aquellas especies que figuran en la lista roja de la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza.
El ADN ambiental consiste en tomar y analizar muestras del medio ambiente en lugar de extraerlo de un organismo individual, precisó en su nota la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura.
