Un total de 45 periodistas murieron en 2021 al ejercer su profesión, siendo México el país más peligroso del mundo para los reporteros, informó hoy en Viena el Instituto Internacional de Prensa (IPI).
Siete periodistas mexicanos resultaron asesinados este año por su trabajo, con lo que el país latinoamericano vuelve a liderar el listado anual de reporteros muertos, reseñó EFE.
Le siguen India y Afganistán, cada uno con seis periodistas muertos, delante de la República Democrática del Congo, con tres.
En 2020 murieron 55 periodistas en todo el mundo, de ellos, once en México.
Según el IPI, una red mundial de propietarios y editores de medios de comunicación, la seguridad de los periodistas sigue siendo un desafío global.
Por eso, el Instituto «insta a las autoridades a terminar con la impunidad de estos crímenes y a garantizar la protección de periodistas, que deben estar en condiciones de ejercer su trabajo de forma libre y segura».
De los 45 periodistas muertos, 40 eran hombres y cinco eran mujeres, detalla el IPI en un comunicado.
28 de ellos asesinados por su trabajo
Veintiocho de ellos fueron asesinados por su trabajo, tres murieron cuando estaban trabajando en una zona de conflicto y dos cuando cubrían disturbios internos en un país.
En once casos aún se investigan las causas de las muertes, mientras que un periodista murió ahogado al cubrir el rescate de un elefante de un río en India, lo que demuestra lo peligrosa que puede ser la profesión.
El número de periodistas muertos este año es el más bajo registrado por el IPI desde 1997.
Sin embargo, el IPI destaca que el descenso en el número de periodistas muertos y asesinados no es un indicio sobre el buen estado de la libertad de prensa en el mundo.
«Olas de violencia contra la prensa pueden llevar a la autocensura cuando periodistas evitan ciertos temas que ponen sus vidas en peligro», señala el IPI.
“Esto empeora aún más en un clima de impunidad en el que los asesinos no deben responder por sus actos. IPI se solidariza con las familias y con los colegas de todos los periodistas asesinados por su trabajo en 2021 y exige que los responsables respondan por sus actos», concluye el comunicado.
