Los comicios «completan la conversión de Nicaragua en un régimen autocrático«, aseguró el alto representante para la Política Exterior de la UE, Josep Borrell, al leer una declaración en nombre de los Veintisiete.
En la declaración, se hace un llamamiento a Ortega para que «devuelva la soberanía de Nicaragua al pueblo nicaragüense» y, además, no descarta adoptar restricciones que «puedan ir más allá» de las individuales.
Gobiernos europeos por separado, como el de Alemania y España, se pronunciaron asimismo en similar tono sobre estos comicios.
El ministro español de Asuntos Exteriores, José Manuel Albares, aseguró en Madrid que lo de este domingo en Nicaragua «no se puede llamar elecciones, han sido una burla» al pueblo, a UE, la comunidad internacional y la democracia. El ministro de Exteriores de Rusia, Serguéi Lavrov, por el contrario, aseguró que «enviamos a observadores (…) y, de acuerdo con su testimonio, los comicios se celebraron de forma organizada y con el cumplimiento de la legislación nicaragüense, la reglas epidémicas impuestas por la COVID-19 y una significativa participación ciudadana«.
