Sinovac dice que su vacuna es segura para niños desde 3 años

La farmacéutica Sinovac dijo el martes que su vacuna contra el COVID-19 es segura para niños entre 3 y 17 años, según datos preliminares. La firma envió los datos a la agencia reguladora china del medicamento.

Se han distribuido más de 70 millones de dosis de la vacuna de Sinovac en China y otros países.

China ha autorizado su uso en adultos, pero aún no se ha empleado en niños, porque su sistema inmune podría responder de manera diferente a la vacuna.

Los ensayos de fase inicial e intermedia con más de 550 sujetos mostraron que la vacuna provocaría una respuesta inmune, señaló Gang Zeng, director médico de Sinovac, en una conferencia de prensa.

Dos de los sujetos -uno de 3 años y otro de 6- tuvieron fiebre alta en respuesta a la vacuna. El resto registró síntomas moderados, indicó Zeng.

“Mostrar que la vacuna es segura y produciría una respuesta inmune potencialmente útil contra el SARS-CoV-2 es algo a celebrar mucho”, dijo Eng Eong Ooi, profesor de la Facultad de Medicina de Duke NUS en Singapur, que codirige el desarrollo de otra vacuna contra el COVID-19. Sin embargo, señaló que los datos publicados por la compañía no bastaban para dar una respuesta concluyente a los hallazgos.

Situación

Los niños son menos propensos a enfermar de gravedad por COVID-19, pero siguen corriendo un riesgo y pueden contagiar el virus. Y si bien las campañas de vacunación en todo el mundo se han centrado en los adultos, para poner fin a la pandemia hay que inmunizar a los niños.

La vacuna de Pfizer está autorizada para su uso a partir delos 16 años y se está estudiando para el tramo de 12 a 16 años. Moderna está estudiando su vacuna en niños a partir de 12 años y la semana pasada anunció un nuevo ensayo para menores de esa edad.

Sinopharm, una compañía estatal china que tiene otras dos vacunas contra el COVID-19, también está investigando la efectividad de sus fármacos en niños. La firma comentó en enero que había enviado datos clínicos a las autoridades, aunque no estaba claro si eran de una o las dos vacunas que produce.
