Una sequía “cada vez más grave” amenaza los medios de vida de más de siete millones de agricultores en Afganistán, según la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (FAO), lo que agrava aún más la situación humanitaria en Afganistán, en plena crisis tras la llegada de los talibanes al poder.
De acuerdo a las previsiones divulgadas hoy por el organismo de la ONU, con sede en Roma, la cosecha de este año será un 20 % inferior a la de 2020 y un 15 % más baja que la media debido a la sequía, mientras que se estima que la necesidad de cereales será un 28 % superior a la del año pasado, reseñó EFE.
Las estimaciones de la FAO también señalaron que “tres millones de animales están en riesgo”, por lo que el organismo recomendó una protección “urgente” de la ganadería afgana ante la sequía.
Los siete millones de agricultores amenazados por la sequía se encuentran entre los 14 millones de afganos, uno de cada tres habitantes del país, que padecen inseguridad alimentaria grave y necesitan asistencia humanitaria urgente.
La FAO alertó de que “la combinación de una grave sequía, las repercusiones económicas relacionadas con la COVID-19 y los desplazamientos generalizados ha azotado a las comunidades rurales del Afganistán, en particular a los agricultores y pastores, que constituyen el eje central de la economía del país”.
Ante la campaña de trigo de invierno, cuya siembra empieza en septiembre, la FAO prevé prestar asistencia a 250.000 familias agrícolas vulnerables, pero recordó que la financiación actual “solo permitirá llegar a 110.000 familias” porque “existe un déficit de financiación de 18 millones de dólares”.
“En este momento es fundamental prestar apoyo agrícola urgente para contrarrestar los efectos de la sequía y el empeoramiento de la situación en vastas zonas rurales del Afganistán en las próximas semanas y meses”, dijo el director general de la FAO, Qu Dongyu, en un comunicado.
“Si los agricultores no pueden conseguir las semillas que necesitan con urgencia a finales de septiembre o principios de octubre, no habrá campaña del trigo de invierno. Esto será un desastre para millones de afganos, tanto si son agricultores como si son consumidores”, señaló el representante de la FAO en Afganistán, Richard Trenchard.
La FAO destacó que, “a pesar del déficit de financiación y de las difíciles circunstancias”, mantiene el objetivo de prestar asistencia a 3,5 millones de personas en Afganistán en 2021 de acuerdo con su Plan de respuesta humanitaria.
