El Senado de Estados Unidos confirmó este miércoles a la teniente general Laura Richardson como jefa del Comando Sur de las Fuerzas Armadas del país, convirtiéndose así en la primera mujer en llegar a este puesto.
El Senado dio luz verde esta madrugada a la nominación de Richardson, de 57 años, y a su promoción como general de cuatro estrellas, mientras que también fue confirmado el excongresista latino Gil Cisneros como subsecretario de Defensa para temas de personal y preparación.
El Comando Sur, conocido por su siglas en inglés, Southcom, es la unidad encargada de las operaciones militares estadounidenses en Latinoamérica y el Caribe.
La nominación de Richardson a este puesto fue anunciada por el presidente de EEUU, Joe Biden, el pasado 8 de marzo en un acto en la Casa Blanca con motivo del Día Internacional de la Mujer.
Tras su ratificación, Richardson se convierte en la segunda mujer que lidera un comando combatiente en la historia de Estados Unidos, después de la general retirada Lori Robinson, que dirigió el Comando Norte entre 2016 y 2018.
Junto a la nominación de Richardson, Biden dio a conocer el 8 de marzo a su elegida para ponerse al frente del Comando de Transporte, la general Jacqueline Van Ovost, que aún no ha sido confirmada por la Cámara Alta.
Según el diario The New York Times, el Pentágono había dado el visto bueno a las nominaciones de Richardson y Van Ovost desde hacía meses, pero decidió esperar hasta después de las elecciones de noviembre pasado, que ganó Biden, porque temía que el entonces presidente, Donald Trump, vetara sus nombramientos por ser mujeres.
Richardson ha sido hasta ahora comandante de la formación norte del Ejército de Estados Unidos, con sede en la base conjunta de San Antonio (Texas), y la primera mujer que ha ocupado ese cargo.
Con su confirmación, pasará a liderar a los más de mil 200 militares y civiles que componen el Comando Sur (Southcom, en inglés), con sede en Doral (Florida).
Liderado desde 2018 por el almirante Craig Faller, el Comando Sur ha aumentado en los últimos años su presencia militar en las costas de Latinoamérica para luchar contra el narcotráfico.
Richardson lleva más de tres décadas en las Fuerzas Armadas, a las que se unió en 1986. Su sueño era ser piloto de helicópteros, y empezó a prepararse para serlo cuando tenía 15 años y a las mujeres todavía no se les permitía manejare aeronaves de combate.
Ya como soldado, voló helicópteros Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk y cumplió dos misiones de combate, en Irak y en Afganistán, además de servir como asesora militar del exvipresidente Al Gore (1993-2001) y transportar el maletín nuclear.
En 2017, Richardson se convirtió en la primera mujer subcomandante del mayor mando del Ejército, conocido como Forscom, que llegó a liderar de forma interina a finales de 2018.
Está casada desde hace más de 30 años con otro teniente general de tres estrellas, James Richardson, al que conoció en la escuela de aviación y con el que tiene una hija y una nieta.
