«Este retraso va a dejar un poco más tiempo para la mejora de la situación sanitaria y permitirá optimizar las posibilidades de acoger espectadores en este estadio que tras su modificación se extiende a más de 12 hectáreas», indicó el presidente de la FFT, Guilles Moretton.
Agregó que la presencia de público es «esencial para el torneo», que es el «evento deportivo más importante de la primavera».
Roland Garros se retrasó el año pasado a septiembre por la fuerza que la pandemia tenía en mayo, en sus fechas tradicionales, y solo acogió a 1.000 espectadores diarios.
Esa decisión, que salvó al torneo y permitió al español Rafael Nadal levantar su decimotercera Copa de los Mosqueteros y a la polaca Iga Swiatek alzarse con la edición femenina, tuvo un importante impacto financiero, ya que privó a los organizadores de la mayor parte del dinero de las taquillas.
La FFT apuesta a que la situación sanitaria en Francia mejore en junio gracias al avance de las campañas de vacunación, lo que puede llevar al Gobierno a incrementar el número de espectadores autorizado a acudir a los eventos deportivos.
Entre las previsiones que baraja el Ejecutivo figura la de reabrir las terrazas de bares y restaurantes a mediados de mayo y el interior a partir del 1 de junio.
El retraso tendrá consecuencias también para el calendario del tenis, ya que se celebrará en fechas en las que estaban previstos los torneos de Stuttgart (ATP), s’Hertogenbosch (ATP y WTA) y Nottingham (WTA), en los que se debía lanzar la temporada de hierba.
Como ya sucedió a principios de año con el Abierto de Australia, que también se retrasó unas semanas, el Grand Slam podría verse obligado a pagar una indemnización a esos torneos.
Además, dejará solo dos semanas entre Roland Garros y Wimbledon, programado entre el 28 de junio y el 11 de julio, una configuración que ya existía antes de 2015, cuando se modificó para dejar más tiempo entre los dos gigantes.
