Vladimir Putin planeó la distribución mundial de la vacuna Sputnik V por el laboratorio Gamaleya como una gran campaña de marketing y relaciones públicas para su país. Pero, las cosas no parecen estar saliendo de la mejor manera por las dificultades y demoras que surgieron en la producción que han impedido cumplir con los plazos de los contratos y ya genera preocupación y cancelaciones en los países de América Latina.
De norte a Sur del continente americano son 9 los países que firmaron contratos con el Fondo de Inversión Directa de Rusia (RDIF, por su su sigla en inglés), el organismo gubernamental encargado de comercializar la Sputnik V: Argentina, México, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, Bolivia, Venezuela, Paraguay y Guyana.
Seis de ellos han alzado su voz con quejas por las demoras. Otros dos también recibieron tarde y menos de las dosis prometidas, pero prefieren mantener el bajo perfil para no dañar su relación política con Moscú. Por todos estos problemas, otro país canceló el contrato que estaba por firmar cuando se dio cuenta de que los rusos no podrían cumplirlo, informa el portal argentino Infobae.
No sólo está el problema general de las demoras de los envíos mucho más allá de los plazos establecidos en los contratos. La particularidad de la Sputnik V, la única vacuna contra el COVID-19 que tiene dos componentes distintos que se deben aplicar en cada inoculación, agravó el problema.
Es que la producción del componente 1 (con el vector viral Ad26) ha avanzado a una velocidad algo mayor que la del segundo (Ad5). Así, millones de personas que recibieron la primera dosis se encuentran a la espera de recibir la segunda, superados ampliamente los 21 días entre ambas que se habían programado en un comienzo, e incluso los 3 meses de intervalo que se postularon luego como razonables cuando comenzaron las demoras.
Los gobiernos de Nicolás Maduro y Daniel Ortega también confiaron la vacunación de sus ciudadanos a Moscú, una de las últimas capitales donde todavía reciben sostén político.
La opacidad informativa de ambos gobiernos y las confusas campañas de vacunación llenas de privilegios para los funcionarios y simpatizantes de cada gobierno hace muy difícil tener certezas sobre cuántas vacunas se recibieron y aplicaron. Por supuesto que nadie espera tampoco que desde Caracas o Managua se alce alguna voz de protesta por alguna demora en los envíos.
Lo cierto, en todo caso, es que según las cifras de Our World Data, uno de los sitios más rigurosos que lleva las estadísticas mundiales de vacunación, ambos países se encuentran en los puestos más bajos. Venezuela tiene un 3,87 % de su población con la pauta completa de dosis y Nicaragua 2,46 %.
