La Guardia Costera estadounidense informó este viernes que rescató a 12 migrantes venezolanos que se encontraban en un esquife a la deriva aproximadamente 20 millas al sureste de St. Thomas, Islas Vírgenes de Estados Unidos.
Unidades terrestres, marítimas y aéreas de la Guardia Costera combinaron esfuerzos para localizar con un helicóptero MH-60T Jayhawk el barco, que había quedado dañado, y rescatar la víspera a sus ocupantes, según el comunicado.
Los migrantes, diez hombres y dos mujeres, fueron embarcados de manera segura en el barco de la Guardia Costera y transportados a St. Thomas.
La alarma saltó después de la detención de una treintena de migrantes, en su mayoría ciudadanos venezolanos, que habían tocado tierra en la bahía de St. Thomas en dos embarcaciones.
Los migrantes detenidos informaron de que había un tercer barco a la deriva, que se había separado del grupo al quedar dañado.
El supervisor jefe de las Fuerzas de Embarcaciones de St. Thomas, Luis Cabrera, alabó la «respuesta rápida y gran coordinación» en este caso que permitieron «salvar 12 vidas».
«A pesar del éxito del rescate, no podemos perder de vista los peligros asociados con los viajes de inmigrantes ilegales. Estos viajes se realizan a bordo de embarcaciones muy sobrecargadas con poco o ningún equipo de salvamento», denunció.
