El presidente de la República Dominicana, Luis Abinader, dio inicio este domingo a los trabajos de construcción de la nueva verja en la frontera con Haití, una obra con la que se pretende controlar la migración irregular, el contrabando y el robo.
La verja abarcará 160 kilómetros y contará con un amplio dispositivo tecnológico, según los detalles ofrecidos en el acto celebrado en las proximidades del río Masacre, en la fronteriza Dajabón, y en el que Abinader estuvo acompañado de la cúpula militar y representantes de diversos partidos políticos.
La primera etapa, de 54 kilómetros de hormigón armado, supondrá una inversión de 1.750 millones de pesos (unos 30,7 millones de dólares) y estará lista entre siete y nueve meses.
«Apostamos por una valla inteligente en la frontera, una verja que beneficiará a ambos países porque permitirá controlar de forma mucho más eficiente el comercio bilateral; regular los flujos migratorios para combatir así las mafias con personas, hacer frente al narcotráfico y a la venta ilegal de armas», precisó Abinader tras recodar la grave crisis que atraviesa Haití.
Con esta valla, agregó, «combatiremos las distintas formar del crimen organizado que quieren tomar como base la frontera entre ambos países» y «garantizaremos la seguridad en la zona fronteriza gracias a que podremos disminuir drásticamente la migración irregular que viola la soberanía de los países».
«Una frontera regulada es una frontera mucho más segura», subrayó el gobernante en su discurso.
La construcción de una valla a lo largo de la mayor parte de la frontera con Haití, de 391 kilómetros de extensión, fue anunciada por Abinader formalmente el 27 de febrero del año pasado durante su discurso de rendición de cuentas ante la Asamblea Nacional.
