Voluntarios lograron recolectar más de 1.600 kilos de desechos en las islas ecuatorianas de Galápagos, el paraíso que inspiró la teoría de la evolución, informó este sábado el organismo encargado de la conservación de este ecosistema.
«Galápagos logró retirar de los ecosistemas marinos un total de 1.627 kilos de desechos que contaminaban estos frágiles ambientes«, ubicados a mil kilómetros del continente en el Pacífico sur, publicó en un comunicado el Parque Nacional Galápagos (PNG).
Agregó que «participaron 291 voluntarios en 21 sitios intervenidos en las islas San Cristóbal, Santa Cruz, Isabela y Baltra«, parte del archipiélago cuyo ecosistema sirvió de laboratorio natural al científico inglés Charles Darwin para publicar su teoría sobre la evolución de las especies.
«El objetivo principal de esta actividad no es recoger más basura, sino que cada año vaya disminuyendo la cantidad de desperdicios que terminan en los mares«, manifestó el director del PNG, Danny Rueda, citado en la información oficial.
Los participantes recorrieron un total de 51 kilómetros de costa, donde recaudaron, clasificaron y registraron la basura en el archipiélago, declarado Patrimonio Natural de la Humanidad.
Los desechos que se arrojan a los mares pueden llegar a Galápagos transformados en microplástico, una de las mayores amenazas para las iguanas, tortugas, aves y peces endémicos de este archipiélago.
El PNG precisó que la jornada se desarrolló por el Día Internacional de Limpieza de Playas, que se cumple el tercer sábado de septiembre de cada año.
Ecuador «vivió una jornada de limpieza de playas y cuerpos hídricos en 117 puntos de todo el país«, según indicó el ministerio del Ambiente en sus redes sociales. AFP
