El Programa Mundial de Alimentos de Naciones Unidas (WFP) inició su programa de comidas escolares en Venezuela esta semana, con las primeras raciones para llevar a casa para niños y niñas en 277 escuelas preescolares y su personal en todos los municipios en el estado de Falcón.
Los niños y niñas menores de 6 años, en zonas identificadas por WFP como más afectadas por la inseguridad alimentaria, son la prioridad del programa, que se ampliará progresivamente a otros estados venezolanos para llegar a 185 mil personas para fines de este año, 850 mil para fines del año escolar 2021-2022 y 1,5 millones para fines del año escolar 2022-2023.
“Estamos llegando a estos niños y niñas vulnerables en una fase crítica de sus vidas cuando sus cerebros y cuerpos necesitan alimentos nutritivos para que desarrollen todo su potencial,” dijo Susana Rico, representante interina de WFP en Venezuela, durante la primera distribución el martes en la escuela Antonio Dolores, en el pueblo de Coro.
“Las escuelas como esta son más que un lugar para aprender, son pilares de la comunidad y ofrecen una excelente oportunidad para brindar a los niños y niñas pequeños lo que necesitan para prosperar”.
Las madres, padres o tutores recogen las raciones para llevar a casa en la escuela en la que sus hijos están matriculados. La ración mensual para cada niño y niña menor de 6 años contiene seis kilos de arroz, cuatro kilos de lentejas, 454 gramos de sal yodada y un litro de aceite vegetal.
Una vez que se reabran las escuelas preescolares, WFP ayudará a rehabilitar los comedores y capacitará al personal en prácticas de inocuidad alimentaria para servir comidas calientes nutritivas. Las escuelas están actualmente cerradas en Venezuela debido a la pandemia de la COVID-19.
WFP inició su programa de comidas escolares poco más de dos meses después de firmar un acuerdo en abril de 2021 con el Gobierno de la República Bolivariana de Venezuela que permite a WFP establecer una presencia en el país e iniciar su operación humanitaria.
Para la implementación de su programa de comidas escolares, WFP está gestionando su propia cadena de suministro, desde la compra de comida hasta su distribución en las escuelas. El programa se realiza en cooperación con las autoridades escolares, los profesores y conjuntamente con organizaciones no gubernamentales locales.
