Dos píldoras nuevas contra el COVID-19 que se supone serían un arma importante contra la pandemia en Estados Unidos escasean y han jugado un papel poco relevante en el combate de la ola de contagios de ómicron.
El problema es que la producción aún no se encuentra a su máximo y que la píldora que es considerada muy superior, la de Pfizer, toma entre seis y ocho meses en fabricarse.
Si bien se espera que el suministro mejore drásticamente en los próximos meses, los médicos solicitan las píldoras ahora, no sólo porque la variante ómicron está causando que se disparen los casos sino porque dos medicamentos de anticuerpos que en su momento fueron los tratamientos preferidos no funcionan tan bien contra la variante.
“Este debería ser un momento realmente feliz porque ahora tenemos píldoras antivirales altamente efectivas”, dijo Erin McCreary, una farmacóloga y administradora del Centro Médico de la Universidad de Pittsburgh. “En vez de eso, éste parece el tramo más duro y caótico de la pandemia”.
Las píldoras —y de hecho otros medicamentos contra el COVID-19— están siendo racionados cuidadosamente, reservados para los pacientes de mayor riesgo.
“Enero va a ser un mes terrible con un millón de casos por día”, subrayó el médico Myron Cohen, virólogo de la Universidad de Carolina del Norte. “A la mayoría de la gente le irá perfectamente bien, pero tenemos que seleccionar a las personas que no y brindarles los medicamentos que estén disponibles”.
La Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos de Estados Unidos (FDA por sus siglas en inglés) autorizó el uso de las dos píldoras de Pfizer y Merck a finales del mes pasado con base en estudios que muestran que ambas reducen el riesgo de una enfermedad severa y de muerte cuando se administra poco después de que los síntomas aparecen. Son los primeros tratamientos contra el COVID-19 que los pacientes pueden llevar a casa, y por ello reduce la carga de los hospitales.
Estados Unidos no realizó el tipo de compras masivas por adelantado que hizo con las vacunas.
Debido al tiempo que toma fabricar la píldora de Pfizer, Paxlovid, la compañía indicó que puede entregar solamente cerca de 250.000 tratamientos para finales de este mes.
Estados Unidos ha ordenado suficientes Paxlovid para atender a 20 millones de personas, pero las primeras 10 millones de órdenes serán entregadas apenas en junio.
La píldora de Merck, molnupiravir, es más fácil de fabricar y ofrecer en mayores cantidades.
