El Pentágono anunció este sábado que el dron que lanzó en las últimas horas sobre Afganistán acabó con la vida de dos supuestos miembros del Estado Islámico (EI) «de alto perfil» e hirió a otro, informó el subdirector de Logística del Estado Mayor de EE.UU., el general Hank Taylor, en una rueda de prensa.
Hasta ahora, el Pentágono había informado solo de la muerte de un supuesto miembro del EI en la ofensiva estadounidense en represalia por el atentado del jueves en el aeropuerto de Kabul, que fue reivindicado por ese mismo grupo terrorista y que dejó decenas de muertos, incluidos 13 soldados estadounidenses.
Taylor dijo que hubo «cero víctimas civiles» y afirmó que Washington continuará realizando operaciones contra los terroristas del EI «según sea necesario«.
Asimismo, detalló que los supuestos terroristas ejecutados desempeñaban los papeles de «facilitadores» y «planificadores» del EI, aunque rechazó precisar si participaron de alguna forma en la organización del ataque contra el aeropuerto de Kabul o qué funciones específicas desempeñaban.
En la misma rueda de prensa, el portavoz del Departamento de Defensa, John Kirby, rechazó valorar cómo la pérdida de esos dos individuos puede impactar la capacidad del EI para planificar ataques.
«El hecho de que estos dos individuos ya no estén andando sobre la faz de la tierra, eso es algo bueno. Es algo bueno para la gente de Afganistán, es algo bueno para nuestras tropas y para nuestras fuerzas en el aeropuerto«, se limitó a decir Kirby.
Preguntado al respecto, el portavoz indicó que Washington «no» compartió información con los talibanes sobre el ataque.
Según informó anoche el Pentágono, la operación se produjo en la provincia de Nangarhar, un terreno montañoso en el este de Afganistán que es muy difícil de controlar y que ha servido de bastión al grupo terrorista desde su aparición en Afganistán en 2015.
El ataque de EE.UU. se produjo 24 horas después de que el presidente estadounidense, Joe Biden, prometiera venganza contra el EI y revelara que había ordenado a sus comandantes desarrollar planes para golpear objetivos del grupo terrorista en Afganistán, a sus líderes y sus bases.
El número de víctimas del atentado del jueves en Kabul asciende a, al menos, 170 personas fallecidas y 150 heridas, indicaron en Kabul fuentes próximas a los talibanes; mientras el Pentágono ha informado de la muerte de 13 soldados estadounidenses y de 18 heridos.
La filial del EI que se hizo responsable del ataque es conocida como Estado Islámico de Jorasán (como los yihadistas se refieren a Afganistán). Fue creada en 2015 y es enemiga acérrima tanto de EE.UU. como de los talibanes. EFE
