Partículas del material expulsado por el volcán Cumbre Vieja, en la isla canaria de La Palma, han alcanzado al archipiélago atlántico de Azores y han provocado una reducción de la visibilidad, según el Instituto Portugués del Mar y la Atmósfera (IPMA).
La Palma y Punta Delgada, la capital de Azores, distan más de 1.200 kilómetros pero el viento ha transportado partículas de la erupción del volcán, que han llegado a las islas lusas «en forma de aerosol sulfato», según el organismo portugués.
Estos «aerosoles» contribuyen a una «dispersión de la luz» y provocan una reducción «significativa» de la visibilidad, agrega el IPMA, en especial en zonas inferiores a los 800 metros de altitud, reseñó EFE.
Además, la «elevada humedad» que se registra en las Azores contribuye a aumentar el tamaño de las partículas, lo que se ha traducido en las últimas horas en una intensa neblina.
La erupción del volcán de Cumbre Vieja comenzó el pasado día 19, ha afectado a más de mil edificaciones y ha obligado a evacuar a más de 5.000 personas en La Palma.
