El jefe del Comando Central (CENTCOM) de las Fuerzas Armadas de Estados Unidos, general Kenneth McKenzie, afirmó este viernes que ve a Irán «como la mayor amenaza para la seguridad y la estabilidad» regional de Oriente Medio.
Teherán «proporciona armas, apoyo y dirección a sus aliados en la región, que llevan a cabo actos de terrorismo y socavan los Gobiernos locales; todo por los intereses iraníes», dijo McKenzie en una rueda de prensa virtual desde el Pentágono, antes de dejar el puesto el próximo 1 de abril.
El responsable militar agregó que «la amenaza de misiles balísticos de Irán» ha continuado expandiéndose.
Ante esta situación, McKenzie remarcó que EEUU ha impulsado su cooperación en materia de defensa aérea con sus aliados, en concreto Israel, y destacó que está buscando aprovechar en este sentido los acuerdos de normalización de relaciones entre los israelíes y varios países árabes, como Marruecos, Emiratos Árabes Unidos y Baréin.
«Pese a seguir siendo incipiente en estos momentos, hemos visto una disposición por parte de los aliados regionales tradicionales a trabajar juntos en ejercicios con la Defensa israelí. La defensa aérea es una oportunidad excelente de cooperación», dijo.
McKenzie consideró que un primer paso podría ser compartir información con vistas a mejorar los sistemas antimisiles frente a Irán y expresó su esperanza de que la cooperación en este ámbito progrese en los próximos años.
El área de operaciones del CENTCOM abarca 21 países y se extiende desde el norte de África, Oriente Medio y el centro y el sur de Asia.
