La ONG Observatorio Venezolano de Prisiones (OVP) indicó este miércoles que el 63,01 % de las muertes en las cárceles de Venezuela durante 2020 estuvieron relacionadas con condiciones de salud, luego de registrar 184 decesos por diversas enfermedades, de un total de 292 fallecidos en centros penales.
“Las muertes por condiciones de salud representaron el 63,01 % de los decesos, con un total de 184 fallecidos por motivos de salud”, dijo el OVP en un informe, reseñó EFE.
Según explicó, esta cifra es un “aumento desproporcionado” en comparación con el año anterior, pues “solo entre 2019 y 2020 el número de fallecidos por salud se incrementó un 178,79 %”.
El OVP precisó que 85% de las muertes las causaron la tuberculosis y la desnutrición, y el resto estuvo asociado a hepatitis, obstrucciones intestinales, diabetes, crisis convulsivas sin tratamiento y otros.
“Resalta que en todos los casos documentados por OVP en el año 2020, las personas recluidas carecían de atención médica en los penales, más de un 95% de los fallecidos estaban desnutridos y un número significante de fallecidos presentó cuadros de desnutrición severa aún cuando sus causas de muertes resultaron otras”, apuntó.
Pérdidas súbitas de peso
Además, la organización señaló que los detenidos también presentaron pérdidas de peso de entre 40 y 50 kilos.
“De la misma forma, se constató que fueron pocos los presos que fueron trasladados a un centro de atención médica, alegando que no había una orden de un tribunal o transporte para tal fin”, añadió.
Asimismo, indicó que las 108 muertes restantes ocurrieron por “episodios de violencia”.
“Tal fue el caso del Centro Penitenciario de Los Llanos (Cepella), ubicado en Guanare, estado Portuguesa, donde fallecieron 49 presos y 75 resultaron heridos durante un motín por el ingreso de alimentos”, citó el OVP a modo de ejemplo.
Venezuela tiene una población carcelaria de 40.000 reos, según datos oficiales, y varias ONG estiman que en los centros de detención preventiva hay entre 40.000 y 65.000 más, por lo que denuncian un problema de hacinamiento.
A finales de mayo, el presidente Nicolás Maduro ordenó la creación de una comisión para resolver la situación en los centros de detención preventiva en un período de 60 días.
