La Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) criticó este miércoles los retrasos en la entrega de vacunas en el continente americano a través de Covax, el mecanismo apoyado por la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) para propiciar la distribución equitativa de los fármacos contra la covid-19.
En una rueda de prensa, el subdirector de la OPS, Jarbas Barbosa, lamentó que el mecanismo Covax «ha entregado cantidades mucho menores de lo esperado» en América, lo que, según él, «dificulta el acceso equitativo en la región».
El médico brasileño ejemplificó estos retrasos con el caso de Perú, que ha recibido 2,5 millones de inoculaciones de los 13 millones de vacunas que solicitó al mecanismo apoyado por la OMS.
En sus declaraciones, el funcionario explicó que esto se debe a varios motivos, como el hecho de que los productores de vacunas «no estén priorizando el envío para el mecanismo Covax», sino los acuerdos bilaterales que han alcanzado con otros países, ya que bajo estos convenios «las vacunas son más caras».
Además, Barbosa dijo que unos 500 millones de dosis están pendientes de entrega debido a la pausa de las exportaciones del Instituto Serum de la India (SII), el mayor fabricante de vacunas del mundo, que se ha concentrado en la inmunización de la población de ese país.
En esa misma conferencia de prensa, la directora de la OPS, Carissa Etienne, habló también de la desigualdad que existe todavía en el ritmo de vacunación entre países de América del Norte y América del Sur respecto a naciones caribeñas y centroamericanas, principalmente por la falta de acceso y el escepticismo sobre la efectividad de las vacunas.
