El director general de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), Tedros Ghebreysus, afirmó hoy que la pandemia de coronavirus «acabará cuando el mundo decida que termine«, pero «lo que falta ahora es la voluntad política», y lo principal es que las vacunas lleguen a países que tienen pocas, sobre todo en África.
Tedros, que intervino en una mesa redonda dentro del Foro de París por la Paz, subrayó que «África, en particular, es el continente más afectado por la desigual distribución» de vacunas, ya que la cobertura allí es únicamente del 5 %.
Eso contrasta con que los países miembros del G20 han inoculado más del 80 % de las vacunas contra la covid de todo el mundo.
Afirmó que esta desigualdad «es condenable» desde el punto de vista moral, pero también por las consecuencias epidemiológicas y económicas que tiene.
«Es algo que tiene que resolverse», dijo Tedros, quien pidió en concreto que los gobiernos que disponen de muchas vacunas las compartan para poder alcanzar el objetivo de una cobertura del 40 % de la población a nivel mundial a finales de este año y del 70 % a mediados de 2022.
El director de la OMS advirtió de que si se mantienen las tendencias actuales, habrá unos 80 países en todo el mundo que no alcanzarán una cobertura del 40 % al terminar 2021.
Tedros hizo hincapié en que después de varios meses en que parecía que la epidemia remitía, hay un aumento de casos y ahora las cifras de incidencia y de muertos son muy elevadas, con alrededor de 7.000 fallecimientos diarios.
«Ningún país conseguirá poner fin por sí solo a esta pandemia», repitió el responsable de la OMS, que aprovechó también para hacer un llamamiento en favor de la generalización de la cobertura sanitaria universal, que a su parecer permitiría entre otras cosas prevenir en el futuro repuntes epidémicos.
El presidente del Consejo Europeo, Charles Michel, que participó en esa misma mesa redonda, aseguró que «la UE está totalmente comprometida para resolver esa injusticia» del acceso desigual a las vacunas en diferentes partes del mundo.
Michel contó que en los últimos días, los miembros de la Unión Europea (UE) han añadido 200 millones de dosis al dispositivo Covax para repartir vacunas a los países más pobres.
