La pandemia de coronavirus tendrá un impacto «a largo plazo» en la salud mental de las poblaciones, advirtieron el jueves la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) y los ministros europeos de Sanidad, con ocasión de una reunión de dos días en Atenas.
“Desde la ansiedad vinculada con la transmisión del virus, el impacto psicológico de los confinamientos y del autoaislamiento, las consecuencias vinculadas al desempleo, las dificultades financieras hasta a la exclusión social, (…), todo el mundo se ve afectado de una manera u otra”, detallaron los ministros y la OMS en un comunicado.
La pandemia tendrá un “impacto a largo plazo y de gran alcance”, se inquietan. “Estamos hablando de un componente clave de nuestra salud, que requiere una acción ahora” de los gobiernos, instó el primer ministro griego Kyriakos Mitsotakis a la apertura en Atenas de un foro de dos días sobre el impacto de la pandemia.
“Debemos hablar abiertamente del estigma que acompaña a la salud mental”, añadió.
Para Margaritis Schinas, vicepresidente de la Comisión Europea, “la pandemia de COVID-19 ha exacerbado el enorme desafío de la salud mental (…) No hay excusa para retrasarse”.
La OMS considera que “no es sólo la contaminación o el miedo a la contaminación lo que ha afectado a la salud mental de la población”.
“El estrés causado por las desigualdades socioeconómicas y los efectos de la cuarentena, el confinamiento, el cierre de las escuelas y de los lugares de trabajo han tenido consecuencias enormes”, subrayan los ministros y la OMS en su comunicado conjunto.
“La pandemia ha sacudido al mundo. Se han perdido más de 4 millones de vidas en todo el planeta, se han destruido ingresos, se han separado familias y comunidades, han quebrado empresas…”, recuerda el director de la OMS en Europa, el doctor Hans Kluge.
“La salud mental y el bienestar deben percibirse como derechos humanos fundamentales”, prosigue, pidiendo a los Estados que reconsideren el acceso a la atención.
Entre las recomendaciones de la OMS a los países europeos figuran el fortalecimiento de los servicios de salud mental en general, la mejora del acceso a la atención a través de la tecnología digital, el aumento de los servicios de apoyo psicológico en las escuelas, las universidades, en el lugar de trabajo y para las personas que trabajan en primera línea en la lucha contra el COVID-19
