Algunos productos no se encuentran, lamenta otra cliente de 64 años que pide permanecer en el anonimato. «Hace un par de días, solo estaba buscando bicarbonato para hacer un pastel, imposible de encontrar. Ahora, lo mismo para las especias para hacer sopa. La semana pasada fue peor«, dice enojada.
En otras tiendas son la miel, los huevos, la leche o la carne los productos que han desaparecido de los estantes.
En Washington y en los estados vecinos, Maryland y Virginia, la nieve ha agudizado este problema de desabastecimiento recurrente desde el inicio de la pandemia de COVID-19.
«No hay suficientes camioneros y como están sujetos a regulaciones estrictas en cuanto a horas de trabajo y descanso, dicen ‘vamos a parar’, bueno, pues paran y no nos abastecen«, explica un empleado del supermercado Giant de Bethesda que ha estado allí durante ocho años y desea permanecer en el anonimato.
Cuando cae nieve, es aún peor.
Al inicio de la pandemia, por miedo a la escasez, hubo una avalancha de demanda por algunos productos como el papel higiénico, que generó desabastecimiento. «Esta vez es diferente«, dijo el empleado.
«La variante ómicron es tan contagiosa que tiene un impacto casi simultáneo en todo Estados Unidos«, subraya Patrick Penfield, de la universidad de Syracuse.
Una multitud de empleados a lo largo de la cadena de producción de alimentos están enfermos o en cuarentena, lo que interrumpe por completo la cadena de suministro.

El fenómeno está muy extendido en todo el país, pero es más significativo en las regiones que también se enfrentan al mal tiempo, como Washington.

Y en el caso de productos frescos, fácilmente perecederos, es imposible almacenarlos con demasiada antelación, en previsión del mal tiempo.
De ahí los estantes completamente vacíos del domingo, cuando había nevado durante la noche del jueves al viernes. Para el profesor, la escasez de productos alimenticios probablemente se prolongue hasta finales de marzo.
Eso, «si todo vuelve a la normalidad y no hay nueva variante«, dice con cautela.
La Federación Nacional de Comercio (NGA), que representa a los actores independientes en el sector minorista de alimentos, también señala que la escasez de mano de obra continúa «a nivel nacional, ejerciendo presión sobre las industrias esenciales, como los supermercados y la industria alimentaria en general«.
En una encuesta reciente de sus 1.500 miembros, varios de ellos «informaron haber operado sus tiendas a menos del 50% de su capacidad laboral normal, por períodos breves, en el punto álgido de la ola» de contaminación.
Además, la federación advierte a los consumidores que aún deben esperar «interrupciones esporádicas» como ha sucedido durante un año y medio.
Mientras tanto, los trabajadores de los supermercados están tratando de encontrar soluciones para llenar el vacío.
