Está previsto que los Juegos Olímpicos arranquen en poco más de cuatro meses, marcados por la pandemia del coronavirus, costos récord y numerosos escándalos. Y todo esto a unos días de que la próxima semana arranque el relevo de la antorcha desde el noreste del país, una arriesgada aventura con 10.000 corredores que recorrerán Japón hasta la ceremonia inaugural.
Cuando el Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI) concedió los juegos a la capital nipona hace siete años y medio, Tokio se presentó como “un par de manos seguras”. Pero se ha convertido en todo menos eso.
Aunque con la planificación y la organización inicial les fue bien, ahora se han visto golpeados por el coronavirus y parecen descontentos con una cita olímpica que causa nuevos problemas y gastos casi a diario. El apoyo popular se ha desplomado y varias encuestas sugieren que alrededor del 80% de los japoneses quieren que se cancelen o se retrasen de nuevo por los costos y el riesgo que supone celebrar un evento de tal magnitud durante una pandemia.
“El COI y la política japonesa son territorios dominados por los hombres”, dijo a The Associated Press la doctora Barbara Holthus, subdirectora del Instituto Alemán para Esdios Japoneses en Tokio. “Los políticos japoneses tienen un largo historial de promoción de las desigualdades de género, además de muchas otras desigualdades”.
El febrero, el entonces presidente del comité organizador fue obligado a renunciar tras comentarios sexistas en los que afirmó que las mujeres hablaban demasiado durante las reuniones. Hace dos años, el presidente del Comité Olímpico de Japón también se vio forzado a dimitir por un escándalo de sobornos relacionado con la compra de votos y que involucraba a miembros de COI.
Sasaki estaba a cargo de las ceremonias de inauguración y clausura de los Juegos, que está previsto que arranquen el 23 de julio. Además, diseñó la ceremonia de entrega del testigo olímpico a Tokio en Río 2016 y un evento a un año del inicio de la cita que se celebró en julio en el nuevo Estado Nacional.
El año pasado, durante una reunión online de intercambio de ideas con miembros del equipo de planificación, sugirió que la cómica y actriz Naomi Watanabe podría actuar en la ceremonia como una “Olympig”, un juego de palabras ofensivo con las palabras olímpico y cerdo en inglés.
