El poeta Thiago de Mello, conocido por sus versos sobre la preservación de la Amazonía, murió a las 95 años de edad en su casa de la ciudad de Manaus, capital del estado de Amazonas. La causa del fallecimiento no se hizo pública.
«Con profundo pesar lamento la muerte del poeta Thiago de Mello, ícono de la cultura nacional, nacido en Barreirinha, aquí en Amazonas. Thiago deja un legado de amor por el arte y nuestras raíces. En este momento de dolor, me uno en oración con familiares y amigos», declaró el gobernador del estado de Amazonas, Wilson Lima.
Nacido en Barreirinhas, en el interior de Amazonas, De Mello ha sido considerado uno de los grandes poetas brasileños. Sus obras fueron traducidas a más de treinta idiomas, pero entre todas ellas sin duda la más famosa fue ‘Os Estatutos do Homem (Los estatutos del hombre)’.
«Queda decretado que ahora vale la verdad, ahora vale la vida, y, de manos dadas, marcharemos todos por la vida verdadera», reza el primero de los 14 «artículos poéticos» de la obra, un clásico de la poesía brasileña.
De Mello fue también editor, periodista y diplomático. Trabajó en medios opositores del gobierno de Getúlio Vargas y fue diplomático cultural en Bolivia y Chile, pero su carrera se interrumpió por el golpe militar en 1964.
Su postura en contra de la dictadura le obligó a pasar casi una década en el exilio, en países como Argentina, Portugal y Chile, y entabló gran amistad con el poeta chileno Pablo Neruda, de quien tradujo una de sus antologías al portugués.
El velorio del poeta tendrá lugar en el Palacio Río Negro, en el centro histórico de Manaus.
