«El comandante de los creyentes, el jeque Hibatullah Akhundzada, se presentó ante una gran congregación en la famosa madraza Darul Uloom Hakimah y habló durante 10 minutos con sus valientes soldados y discípulos«, dijo el gobierno talibán en un mensaje que acompaña un registro de audio.
En el audio publicado en las redes talibanas se escucha claramente cuando el mulá recita oraciones y bendiciones.

Hasta entonces era una figura relativamente desconocida y participaba más en asuntos religiosos y legales que en maniobras militares.
Una vez en el poder, Akhundzada obtuvo rápidamente la lealtad del egipcio Ayman al Zawahiri, líder de Al Qaida, quien lo designó «emir de los creyentes«, reforzando su credibilidad en el universo yihadista y sunita.
En su papel como líder supremo, Akhundzada es responsable de mantener la unión entre los talibanes, una misión compleja dadas las luchas internas que han fracturado al movimiento islamista radical.
