La leyenda del jazz, la gran estrella popular de la música, el embajador cultural de Estados Unidos, el maestro Louis Armstrong falleció el 6 de julio de 1971 en su casa de Nueva York, pero su estilo y su mundo maravilloso continúan sonando a pesar de los años.
Ese día, en su casa del barrio neoyorquino de Corona, dieron su último suspiro los pulmones de Satchmo, como era conocido Armstrong, y que dieron vida a canciones míticas como What a Wonderful World, West End Blues o Hello Dolly, que alcanzó en 1964 el puesto número uno en las listas de Estados Unidos, superando a los Beatles.
Su hogar, donde residió con su cuarta y última esposa Lucile Wilson, y convertido ahora en un museo en memoria del gran artista, ofrecerá el próximo día 10 de julio una jornada de puertas abiertas con actividades al aire libre para recordar el legado de «Pops» como lo llamaban los jóvenes admiradores de su música.
El cornetista, trompetista y cantante nació el 4 de agosto de 1901 en Nueva Orleans en el seno de una familia desestructurada en la que su madre se veía obligada a prostituirse para seguir adelante y con un padre ausente.
Durante su infancia, sumida en la pobreza, Armstrong pasó dos años en el reformatorio (1912-1914) por delitos menores. Una experiencia que le cambiaría la vida, ya que allí allí, bajo la tutela de Peter Davis, aprendió a tocar la corneta y se convirtió en el líder de la banda de música del Hogar de Nueva Orleans para niños abandonados negros.
Tras recuperar la libertad y dispuesto a convertise en músico profesional, dio sus primero pasos apadrinado por el mejor cornetista de la ciudad Joe «King» Oliver, con quien tocaría en los barcos fluviales del Mississippi y se cuenta que también por prostíbulos del barrio de Storyville.
Aquí forjaría las bases que lo acabaría convirtiendo en el primer gran solista del jazz, el primer cantante y en el hombre que prácticamente inventó el «scat-singing», la imitación de los sonidos de instrumentos con la voz.
En 1922, ‘King’ Oliver le invitó a unirse a su banda en Chicago, marcando el despegue de su carrera musical y el comienzo de las grabaciones de sus actuaciones.
Los discos de la segunda mitad de esa década, al frente del quinteto Louis Armstrong and His Hot Five, y más tarde del septeto Hot Seven, están considerados entre los más influyentes en el jazz de todos los tiempos.
Por esa época también tocó con la orquesta liderada por el pianista Fletcher Henderson, donde decidió cambiarse a la trompeta.
Su carrera solo fue detenida por la parca y en su camino dejó decenas de éxitos como –Blueberry Hill (1949) o Mack the Knife (1955) y de colaboraciones con otras leyendas del jazz como Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Duke Ellington y Dave Brubeck.
Con este último publicaría el influyente disco álbum The Real Ambassadors en 1961. En 1967 grabó una de sus canciones más reconocibles, What a Wonderful World sencillo escrito por Bob Thiele y George David Weiss. Su letra es un canto a la esperanza en los turbulentos años sesenta americanos.
Otra de las grandes leyendas del jazz, Miles Davis aseguró refiriéndose al maestro de Nueva Orleands: «No se puede tocar nada en la trompeta que no venga de él, ni siquiera mierda moderna. No recuerdo un momento en el que sonara mal tocando la trompeta. Nunca».
Pero su carrera también tuvo su proyección en la gran pantalla con participaciones en una veintena de largometraje, según detalla EFE.
Con motivo del 50 aniversario de su muerte y el 120 aniversario de su nacimiento, se han organizado conferencias, se han estrenado documentales como Black & Blues: The Colorful Ballad of Louis Armstrong, o el musical sobre su vida A Wonderful World, y se espera la inauguración de una ampliación de la Casa Museo de Louis Armstrong en Corona.
