Un presunto asesino serial que alarmó a Brasil, y que contaba con un extenso historial de violencia, fue muerto este lunes durante una megaoperación policial de búsqueda y captura que se extendió por más de 20 días, informaron fuentes oficiales.
La Policía Civil del estado de Goias, en la región centro-oeste del país, confirmó que el sospechoso, calificado como un “psicópata imprevisible” por las autoridades, murió después de que se produjera “un intenso intercambio de disparos” en el momento de su captura, aunque no dio mayores detalles.
Asimismo, el gobernador de Goias, Ronaldo Caiado, explicó a la cadena televisiva GloboNews que había sido informado sobre un “duro enfrentamiento” entre Lázaro Barbosa, de 32 años, y la policía y que el sospechoso llegó a ser socorrido, pero no resistió a las heridas.
Poco antes de la confirmación de la muerte, Caiado llegó a anunciar la captura del criminal durante la operación, que contó con unos 270 agentes de seguridad y se extendió por 20 días.
“Era una cuestión de tiempo que nuestra policía, la más preparada del país, capturara el asesino Lázaro Barbosa. Enhorabuena a nuestras fuerzas de seguridad”, afirmó el gobernador en un video publicado en redes sociales.
Barbosa sembró el miedo en la región central de Brasil en las últimas semanas y había puesto en jaque a la policía del país, que desde el pasado día 9 venía manteniendo una intensa persecución que culminó con su muerte este lunes.
De acuerdo con el gobernador, el sospechoso fue capturado en la pequeña localidad de Cocalzinho, en las cercanías de la base montada por los policías para la operación y a unos 100 kilómetros de la capital federal, Brasilia.
Barbosa contaba con unos extensos antecedentes criminales, que datan desde 2007, cuando con apenas 15 años fue detenido en el interior del estado de Bahía por dos asesinatos.
En la época huyó hacia Brasilia, donde fue arrestado en 2009 y declarado culpable de tres asaltos a mano armada y dos violaciones.
Huyó de la cárcel cinco años después, fue detenido otra vez en 2018 por dos homicidios y una violación, pero volvió a escapar y reapareció en abril pasado, cuando secuestró y abusó sexualmente de una mujer en un barrio de la periferia de Brasilia.
Hace unas semanas irrumpió de forma violenta en una granja, donde asesinó a cuatro personas, incluida una mujer a la que antes violó, para dejar luego su cadáver parcialmente mutilado en un arroyo cercano a la vivienda.
Desde entonces se mantenía en fuga en una extensa zona rural, donde llegó a contar con la ayuda de algunos residentes que lo alimentaron y escondieron/EFE
