Los Juegos Paralímpicos de Pekín fueron oficialmente clausurados este domingo, al término de una edición marcada por la exclusión de los deportistas rusos y bielorrusos a raíz de la invasión de Ucrania.
Andrew Parsons, presidente del Comité Paralímpico Internacional (CPI), calificó a los deportistas participantes de «campeones de la paz», pero sin mencionar específicamente la situación en Ucrania, durante la ceremonia de clausura en el estadio ‘Nido del Pájaro’ de Pekín.
Durante la ceremonia inaugural, Parsons había pronunciado un discurso antibelicista, con el fondo de la invasión rusa en Ucrania, que fue parcialmente censurado durante su difusión por la televisión pública china CCTV, reseña AFP.
Y durante la ceremonia de clausura, una parte de su discurso no fue traducido al chino para el público local. Las expresiones ‘campeones de la paz’ y ‘esperanzas de paz’ fueron omitidas.
Al término de la ceremonia, a la que asistió el presidente chino Xi Jinping, la bandera paralímpica fue replegada y transmitida a los organizadores de la próxima edición, que tendrá lugar en 2026 en Milán y en la estación de esquí de Cortina d’Ampezzo, en los Dolomitas.
Ucrania conquistó un total de 29 medallas (11 de ellas de oro), en biatlón y esquí de fondo, finalizando en segundo puesto del medallero, por detrás del país organizador, China, que se afirmó como una nueva potencia de los paralímpicos de invierno, con 61 medallas en total (18 de ellas de oro).
