Desde 2021 en Venezuela se reportó un “brote importante” de casos de fiebre amarilla, según el subdirector de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS), Jarbas Barbosa, quien informó que el organismo se prepara para enviar al país un lote adicional de un millón 700 mil dosis de vacunas contra esta enfermedad.
“La OPS ha movilizado más de cuatro millones de dosis de vacunas contra la fiebre amarilla para Venezuela y está en proceso de movilizar un millón 700 mil dosis para que toda la población que vive en áreas de riesgo pueda recibir la vacuna”, dijo Barbosa este miércoles 2 de febrero, en respuesta a El Carabobeño durante la habitual conferencia de prensa virtual.
La fiebre amarilla es una enfermedad vírica aguda, hemorrágica, que es endémica en áreas tropicales de África y América Latina. Es difícil diferenciar muchas veces entre casos de fiebre amarilla y otras fiebres hemorrágicas virales como arenavirus, el hantavirus, o el dengue, reseñó El Carabobeño.
Los síntomas aparecen entre tres y seis días después de la picadura de un mosquito infectado. En una fase inicial causa fiebre, dolor muscular y de cabeza, escalofríos, pérdida del apetito y náuseas o vómitos. Para la mayoría de los pacientes estos síntomas desaparecen después de tres a cuatro días.
Sin embargo, el 15 % entra en una segunda fase, más tóxica dentro de las 24 horas siguientes a la remisión inicial. En esta fase, vuelve la fiebre alta y varios sistemas del cuerpo son afectados. La función renal se deteriora. La mitad de los pacientes que pasan a la fase tóxica mueren a los 10 o 14 días, el resto se recupera sin daño orgánico significativo.
El doctor explicó que la reaparición de este tipo de enfermedades, controladas o erradicadas, se ha agudizado no solo en Venezuela sino también en otros países de la región, debido a la reducción de la cobertura vacunal a consecuencia de la pandemia de COVID-19. “Esa reducción puede ser un riesgo importante para que enfermedades que estaban erradicadas en las Américas resurjan”.
Sin embargo, en el caso venezolano desde antes del inicio de la pandemia ya se habían reportado nuevos casos de algunas enfermedades por falta de vacunación. Barbosa recordó el brote de sarampión entre 2017 y 2019, el cual según sus datos fue controlado tras lograr vacunar a ocho millones de niños y niñas gracias a la acción conjunta del gobierno y la OPS.
Fue enfático al señalar que estas infecciones se pueden prevenir principalmente mediante dos pilares: El primero, un sistema de vigilancia efectivo que pueda identificar rápidamente nuevos brotes o casos importados; y el segundo, una cobertura de vacunación homogénea que abarque todos los municipios del país.
La OPS utiliza la cantidad de terceras dosis aplicadas de la vacuna DPT, que previene la difteria, tétanos y tosferina, como indicador para verificar cómo está la cobertura vacunal en el continente y tiene como meta alcanzar el 95 % en cada uno de los países.
“En 2020, 26 países no alcanzaron el 95 % que era la meta y 14 países tuvieron la cobertura con la tercera dosis de DPT menor a 80 %, lo que quiere decir que hay un riesgo importante”, alertó el subdirector del organismo internacional. “Si cada año no alcanzamos la cobertura adecuada, siempre habrá riesgo de nuevos brotes o importaciones de casos”.
COVID-19 en Venezuela
Sobre el desarrollo de la pandemia de COVID-19 en Venezuela, el director de Emergencias Sanitarias de la OPS, Ciro Ugarte, señaló que el país pasó de reportar unos 110 nuevos casos positivos en los primeros días de enero a más de mil 800 el martes 1° de febrero.
En cuanto al diagnóstico, Ugarte sostuvo que el Instituto Nacional de Higiene (INH) informó a la OPS que “por el momento cuenta con suficientes pruebas PCR y de antígeno”. Sin embargo, agregó: “Estamos al tanto de que los sitios de procesamiento de pruebas, tanto públicos como privados, están sobrecargados”.
En ese contexto, la organización recomendó a las autoridades sanitarias del gobierno madurista “optimizar la aplicación de las pruebas para evitar el desabastecimiento que se ha presentado en otros países, ya que la sobrecarga innecesaria de los servicios de laboratorio y la alta demanda global por la variante ómicron, ha disminuido la disponibilidad para compras de pruebas”.
Según el vocero, el sistema público de salud venezolano tiene capacidad para realizar cinco mil pruebas PCR diarias.
