El principal abogado en Cabo Verde del empresario colombiano Alex Saab, fue liberado tras ser detenido en el país africano, donde su cliente está arrestado a petición de EEUU por supuesto blanqueo de dinero, informó hoy a Efe su equipo legal.
El letrado José Manuel Pinto Monteiro había sido detenido este miércoles al intentar “entrar en la casa”, en la que Saab vive bajo arresto domiciliario, a fin de “mantener su reunión diaria con él”, según indicó su equipo legal en un comunicado remitido a Efe.
Pinto Monteiro “protestó por la brusquedad del registro al que fue sometido antes de poder entrar a la casa” en la isla de Sal, señaló la nota, al subrayar que “su detención no tiene precedentes”.
Fuentes de la defensa confirmaron hoy a Efe que el abogado fue finalmente “liberado ayer” mismo, tras una detención exprés.
“Instamos al Gobierno de Cabo Verde a que reconsidere su posición y deje de interferir con el equipo de defensa” de Saab, subrayó el equipo legal, que denunció el “comportamiento antidemocrático de las autoridades caboverdianas”.
El pasado lunes, la defensa ya informó de que Cabo Verde denegó ese día, por cuarta vez, la entrada al país de sus abogados.
Saab fue detenido el pasado 12 de junio cuando el avión en el que viajaba hizo escala para repostar en el Aeropuerto Internacional Amilcar Cabral de la isla caboverdiana de Sal, tras una petición estadounidense a través de Interpol por supuesto blanqueo de hasta 350 millones de dólares.
El Gobierno y una corte del país africano han aprobado la entrega del supuesto testaferro, nombrado por Venezuela “enviado especial” y “representante permanente adjunto” ante la Unión Africana, si bien éste ha apelado ante el Supremo Tribunal de Justicia de Cabo Verde.
La semana pasada, el Gobierno de Venezuela exigió a Cabo Verde la “liberación inmediata” del empresario colombiano, cuya detención considera ilegal por considerar que las autoridades de ese país insular de África occidental violaron su inmunidad diplomática.
