Águilas del Zulia fue al parque Antonio Herrera Gutiérrez en la novena y final semana de la ronda eliminatoria para barrer en dos encuentros y en propia casa al Cardenales de Lara. Luego de imponerse 4-3 el martes, este miércoles salieron airosas 4-2 para disimular un poco los efectos de una segunda eliminación en rueda regular y por segunda campaña al hilo.
Zulia jugó para marca de 6-1, después de quedar matemáticamente sin chance de avanzar al Round Robin semifinal. En las dos últimas semanas enfrentó a los tres mejores clubes de la ronda eliminatoria entiéndase Navegantes del Magallanes, Leones del Caracas y Cardenales de Lara con el balance ya señalado.
En este juego, que tuvo rápido transitar de 2 horas 52 minutos, ambos equipos conectaron 11 inatrapables. A la defensiva, Zulia cometió dos errores y Cardenales pifió en una oportunidad.
La victoria correspondió al zurdo abridor Braulio Torres-Pérez (1-4), quien después de un muy desacertado inicio de temporada, en las semanas recientes pudo conseguirle la vuelta a la liga. Fue auxiliado por cuatro relevistas. Danny Rondón, el último de ellos, se llevó su primer salvado de la zafra.
El revés fue para Alejandro Requena (0-1 más su primera ventaja perdida), primero de cuatro relevistas que siguieron al derecho Néstor Molina, quien tuvo una estupenda apertura de cinco entradas en blanco para Cardenales, que salió en ventaja 1-0 en el propio primer inning.
Jermaine Palacios y Alberto Callaspo abrieron con sendos sencillos al centro y a la derecha. Luego de un out, Palacios salió al robo de la antesala y el receptor Héctor Sánchez metió la bola en el jardín izquierdo para que fuese Palacios quien bautizara la pizarra.
Zulia debió esperar hasta el inicio del sexto acto para anotar su primera carrera, cuando el relevista Requena sustituyó al abridor Molina. Después de un out, Álex Romero soltó sencillo a la izquierda en conteo de 3-1. Ángel Reyes, en cuenta de 3 y 2, le siguió con largo doble impulsor al centro para nivelar la pizarra. Erickson Leonora logró imparable por la grama corta, batazo que hizo un extraño antes de internarse en los jardines y permitir que Reyes pusiera arriba 2-1 a las Águilas.
En el séptimo, Zulia amplió a 4-1 la ventaja ante los envíos del zurdo Elvis Escobar. En situación de un out con las bases limpias, Kenedy Corona ligó sencillo a la derecha. Santiago Rincón se embasó por interferencia del receptor de Yojhan Quevedo, Jackson Chourio sacó base por bolas para llenar las bases y Romero despachó sencillo a la derecha para remolcar a Corona y a Rincón.
En el cierre del noveno y frente al derecho Danny Rondón como improvisado cerrador, Cardenales dejó la definitiva pizarra de 4-2. Osman Marval inició el ataque con sencillo a la derecha. Ricardo Olivar soltó imparable al centro, como emergente por el jardinero izquierdo José Tábata. Quevedo continuó el festejo con incogible a la derecha para llenar las bases, Rondón apretó el brazo para ponchar a Leonel Valera, pero César Izturis Jr. elevó de sacrificio al centro para remolcar a Marval con la última anotación del juego.
Cardenales comenzará ahora a batallar en el Round Robin Semifinal, después de jugar para 28-21 lo cual le concedió el segundo lugar clasificatorio. Por su parte, Zulia esperará la próxima campaña después de terminar con negativo balance de 20-29, en el séptimo lugar de la fase regular.
