El secretario general de la Organización del Tratado del Atlántico Norte (OTAN), Jens Stoltenberg, aseguró este viernes (04.03.2022) que la alianza no tendrá aviones actuando en Ucrania, descartando así establecer una zona de exclusión aérea en ese país, algo que había solicitado el gobierno ucraniano.
«Los aliados acordaron que no debemos tener aviones sobre el espacio aéreo de Ucrania, ni tropas de la OTAN en el territorio de Ucrania», dijo Stoltenberg al término de una reunión de urgencia de cancilleres de la organización transatlántica.
Según Stoltenberg, el envío de aviones de combate de la OTAN para combatir aviones rusos que operan en Ucrania podría signigicar un involucramiento de lleno en el conflicto y comenzar una «guerra total en Europa».
«Creemos que si hacemos eso, acabaremos teniendo algo que puede convertirse en una guerra total en Europa, envolviendo a muchos otros países y causando mucho más sufrimiento humano», expresó.
La solicitud del gobierno ucraniano
Por esa razón los aliados de la OTAN tomaron la «decisión dolorosa» de reforzar sanciones y el apoyo a Ucrania, pero «sin involucrar fuerzas de la OTAN directamente en el conflicto en Ucrania, ni en su territorio ni en su espacio» aéreo.
De esta manera, la alianza militar descarta la petición del gobierno ucraniano. En un mensaje en Twitter, el canciller ucraniano, Dmytro Kuleba, había pedido a los países occidentales que «no permitan que (Vladimir) Putin convierta a Ucrania en Siria».
«Estamos listos para luchar. Seguiremos luchando pero precisamos aliados que nos ayuden con acciones concretas, decididas y rápidas», apuntó.

Involucrarse de lleno sería una «catástrofe»
Stoltenberg recibió este viernes al secretario de Estado estadounidense, Antony Blinken, antes de una reunión de emergencia de la que participaron también el jefe de la diplomacia de la Unión Europea (UE), Josep Borrell, y cancilleres de Finlandia y Suecia, dos países asociados.
Al llegar a esa reunión, el influyente canciller de Luxemburgo, Jean Asselborn, advirtió que la OTAN debe auxiliar a sus países asociados, pero que involucrarse de lleno en el conflicto en Ucrania sería una «catástrofe».
