La Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) aseguró este miércoles que los niños no constituyen un grupo prioritario para la vacunación contra la COVID-19 en el continente americano y advirtió de que la región todavía tiene un «camino largo» para inmunizar a los más vulnerables.
Durante la rueda de prensa semanal del organismo, el subdirector de la OPS, Jarbas Barbosa, se refirió a las solicitud de uso de emergencia en menores de edad de las vacunas contra la COVID-19 presentadas por los distintos fabricantes a los países, entre ellos Estados Unidos, reseña EFE.
Aseguró que esa autorización supone «una decisión soberana» de cada país que no pueden «apoyar o criticar».
Sin embargo, Barbosa aclaró que «los grupos prioritarios en la región no son los niños» y advirtió de que menos de la mitad de la población en América Latina y el Caribe cuenta con una pauta completa de la vacuna.
«Tenemos todavía muchos adultos mayores que tienen un riesgo enorme de morir por una COVID -19, tenemos adultos que tienen hipertensión, diabetes, cáncer que también tienen riesgo muy aumentado de desarrollar una forma grave» de la enfermedad, apuntó.
